© Provided by Associated News The age at which a woman reaches menopause can differ greatly from one individual to another.

The average age of menopause is 51-years-old and most women will experience ‘the change’ between the ages of 45-55. But some females will reach menopause in their 30s.

A new study has found that one significant factor puts women at a higher risk of early menopause.

The study from University of Queensland looked at data from more than 24,000 women and found that being underweight or overweight could impact the age at which a woman reaches menopause.

a person sitting on a bed © Provided by Associated News School of Public Health researcher Professor Gita Mishra and PhD candidate Dongshan Zhu found that underweight women were at higher risk of early menopause.

Overweight and obese on the other hand, were more likely to experience late menopause.

‘Underweight women had more than double the risk of experiencing early menopause compared to those with normal BMI,’ Mr Zhu said.

‘Overweight and obese women had more than 50 per cent higher risk of experiencing late menopause.

© Provided by Associated News ‘These associations were stronger for women who were underweight or obese at least five years prior to the onset of menopause.’

Early menopause is associated with a host of health problems including higher risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and osteoporosis.

Late menopause also comes with health issues like breast and endometrial cancers.

The research was published in the European Journal of Epidemiology.
