The Thatch, Kilmessan, Co Meath

€249,500 Sherry FitzGerald Reynolds, (058) 23444

Thatched houses © Thatched houses If you're going to live in a sprawling thatched house, you might as well go full country gentry- buy a four-by-four, keep horses and let your roots grow out. This cottage at Marshalstown gets you at least part of the way there. It's on six acres with a sand arena and eight stables, and there are four paddocks to keep the nags amused. Inside, the house is 2,500 sq ft on two floors, with three bedrooms upstairs and two downstairs. The ground floor also has an open-plan kitchen, sitting room and dining room roughly 33ft by 14ft, with a wood-burning stove and French doors to a patio. Dublin is about an hour away by car.

Doobally, Ballyshannon, Co Donegal

€125k   Schiller & Schiller, (071) 916 3284

Thatched houses © Thatched houses There are just over 22 acres of land going with this thatched cottage about four kilometres from Ballyshannon, which makes it quite the bargain. The cottage needs modernising, however, and it is small, as was the custom when it was built (it's marked on the first-edition OS map from the mid-19th century). The space measures 445 sq ft which includes a living room with a timber ceiling and fireplace, a kitchen, a bathroom and one bedroom. Also on the grounds are a stable building and a stone shed. It's in a very secluded spot, at the end of a 150-metre laneway.

The Thatch, Cappagh, Co Waterford

€249,500   Sherry FitzGerald Reynolds, (058) 23444

The Thatch, Mountain Castle © Provided by Irish Independent The Thatch, Mountain Castle At the time that this thatched cottage in Mountain Castle was being written up for the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage, back in 2003, it was at the start of a total refurbishment. The job has since been thoroughly completed, and most sympathetically too, with sash windows, a half-door, a restored thatch and a traditional fireplace in the kitchen. It's 1,193 sq ft, all on one floor, including the kitchen, a lounge and three bedrooms. Outside it has its own front courtyard, bounded by stone outbuildings that shelter it from the road, and it's on 0.8 of an acre with lawned gardens and mature trees.

Tullagower, Cooraclare, Co Clare

 €150k  Sherry FitzGerald McMahon, (065) 686 7866

Thatched houses © Thatched houses Back in 2009, this thatched cottage on the main Ennis-Kilrush road was bought by an American couple, who set about completely refurbishing it. They preserved the traditional feel with flagstone floors and exposed ceiling beams, and it has one of those massive stone fireplaces in the kitchen, with a solid-fuel stove in it. There's also a surprisingly bright and airy living room that might serve as a bedroom. There are two more bedrooms (one non-regulation upstairs) in a floor area of 1,001 sq ft. It's on half an acre with an outbuilding, and it's about eight kilometre from Kilrush.
