Thandie Newton wears custom dress adorned with black Star Wars characters as she joins Solo co-stars at glamorous Cannes premiere

But it was Thandi Newton , 45, who stood out by paying homage to black characters from the Star Wars universe in her custom-made Vivienne Westwood gold gown.

The dress featured action figures - from her personal collection - of Finn, Lando Calrissian, Mace Windu, Captain Panaka and Saw Gerrera.

Finnish actor Suotamo plays the role of Chewbacca in the films, but for the premiere he donned a tuxedo and let somebody else wear the costume.

The film is a prequel about a young Han Solo, who was played by Harrison Ford in the original films.

Alden, best known for his role in Hail, Caesar!, will star as the title character, while Game Of Thrones star Clarke will play a character called Qi'ra.

Solo: A Stars Wars Story will be released in UK cinemas on May 25.
