35,000 left without power as Storm Hector brings down power lines and trees across the country

While roads have been closed in anticipation of floods.

ESB Networks have apologised for power cuts which are thought to have affected at least 35,000 customers across the country.

They told customers they are working on faults and told customers to check their progress HERE.

And Gardai warned motorists to drive with extreme caution as high winds are making conditions hazardous.

AA Roadwatch said they had reports of trees down in several counties while there was also a crash on the M9 southbound after J3 Athy.

A Status Yellow wind warning was last night extended to seven more counties as Storm Hector makes its way across the country.

Storm Hector is bringing gusts of up to 125km/hr and a threat of coastal flooding.

The warnings come into effect at 9pm last night and remains in place until 10am tomorrow morning.

An orange wind warning was put in place for counties Donegal, Galway, Mayo and Sligo.

Meanwhile, the yellow wind warning was extended to seven more counties and now applies to Dublin, Kildare, Longford, Louth, Offaly, Westmeath, Meath, Cavan, Monaghan, Leitrim, Roscommon, Clare and Kerry.

Met Eireann warned this morning will be “stormy early this morning in coastal counties of Connacht and Ulster with severe and potentially damaging gusts as very strong southwest winds become westerly.

‘Very windy elsewhere also, especially over the northern half of the country. From late morning onwards, winds will gradually ease. Sunny spells and scattered showers today, heaviest in the west and north’.
