The shock news yesterday evening was that Clonbrien Hero, winner of the Irish Laurels at Curraheen Park in late July, has tested positive.

He returned a positive test for Benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine, on three occasions during the competition. The matter will be passed on to the Control Committee which will conduct an inquiry.

Clonbrien Hero, which earlier won the Produce Stakes at Clonmel, is trained by Graham Holland for Kay Murphy.

The semi-finals of the BoyleSports Irish Derby will be run on Saturday and the Holland-trained Sonic is the 9-4 favourite with Good News at 4-1, and 11-2 bar.

Meanwhile, there have been two defections from Saturday's BoyleSports Derby Plate semi-finals. Tyrur Hugo has been withdrawn from the first semi-final while Kilgraney Denver will be an absentee from the second heat.

There were some high-class performers and the fastest was Potman, which is trained by Michael O'Donovan.

He clocked a brilliant 28.43 but will be well tested by the likes of Allen Star and Mustang Kelly this evening.

Others to note in the heats are Allen Spirit (8.15), Borna Account (8.30) and Conors Blake (8.45).
