A couple's big day ended with them both in handcuffs after a brawl at their reception.

The bride and groom started married life under arrest in Edmonton, Canada after scenes one onlooker described as like something out of an “old Western movie.”

"They're getting drinks. They're just really, really super banged up," witness Matt Machado told CBC news.

"And then all of a sudden we see the smoke pit doors just, like, blow open. Like, you know, in the old Western movies, when a big fight happens and the doors just explode open and everybody piles out? Then security's got this one guy in a headlock and they tumble down the stairs.

"The bride is just like following behind, just swinging."

Machado described how police arrived and arrested the bride, who was still in her wedding dress. The photo of the handcuffed newly-wed went viral; gathering hundreds of likes and retweets.

The 36-year-old bride was charged with assault and her groom, 37, with mischief.

Another onlooker, Ryan Bychkowski, told CBC news: "I've seen the odd scrap but never one where there's a girl in a wedding dress bouncing around.”

He added: "I'm just glad nobody got really hurt. But it was pretty funny."
