Republic of Ireland striker Shane Long has set a new Premier League record after he scored the fastest goal in the league’s history by netting for Southampton after just 7.69 seconds on Tuesday evening.

Long fired the Saints ahead in record time to stun the crowd at Vicarage Road — but Watford eventually managed to net a last-minute equaliser to leave the game 1-1 at the finish.

The goal came from Watford’s kick-off when Roberto Pereyra played the ball from the centre circle back to Craig Cathcart, outside his own goal.

The goal was two seconds faster than the previous record-setter from Spurs defender Ledley King in December 2000, who scored after 9.82 seconds.

If Southampton had managed to hold on for the win, they would have been eight points clear of Cardiff City, who occupy the last relegation spot.
