Riga has been named the best-value city break for a Christmas shopping weekend

But there's another yuletide destination to consider this year, and it's said to be a lot cheaper than other well-known festive spots.

Latvia's capital city Riga has been named the best-value city break for a Christmas shopping weekend by Post Office Travel Money.

The research showed that a two-night trip to Riga totalled £504, and there was even better news when it came to . The cost of gifts in the Latvian city were found to be over 15 per cent cheaper than in London.

Although Prague was found to be the cheapest place for meals, drinks and transfers, limited availability for flights and accommodation meant the price of a two-night package in the Czech capital was more expensive than in any of the other cities surveyed. These included favoured destinations like Lille, the largest in northern France, and Vienna, where Christmas stalls transform its prettiest squares.
