So the Auto Expo is over and for us, the media, covering it, it was actually one of the most lukewarm. Personally this is the third Auto expo I covered and as a journalist, the spark has been missing from the last time. The reason is the large absentee list which was glaringly evident. Of course the numbers are there for the Auto Expo with 22 new launches, 81 product unveilings and 18 concept showcases plus over 6 lakh visitors but the sustained buzz was not there.

Many biggies like Bajaj, Royal Enfield, the whole VW group and many other car makers stayed away plus the ones who were there did not have enough new unveils or anything that would have shock value like last time which saw many global reveals. Celebrities, which is always a key factor for attracting visitors and buzz was less too from the last expo.Of course Kia Motors coming in has been the biggest news- however it is just one and there were simply not enough key, big unveils which a massive auto show should have. The issue remains the cost and ROI which made the entire VW group not participate plus even many other car-makers. Infact around half of the car-makers of the last edition did not turn up.

While the Expo still lived up to its image and the footfall- SIAM needs to make participation more lucrative for car-makers so that many major unveils and many car-makers participate. Lets hope next time we have more participants at the Auto Expo cause it is a mirror for our auto industry!
