The German automaker will diversify its business-class sedan offerings by adding the M550i xDrive, which is outfitted with a 456-horsepower V-8 that can zoom to 60 mph in less than 4 seconds, and the 530e iPerformance, which pairs an electric motor with a four-cylinder engine to make 248 horsepower, while also offering 15 miles of all-electric range.

The seventh generation 5 Series also will feature the 540i xDrive that can hit 60 mph in 4.7 seconds. - www.daniel-kraus.com © Provided by Daily News, L.P. Both offerings will make their public debut next month at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit alongside three additional plug-in hybrids and a coupe concept.

BMW’s 7th generation 5 Series lineup also will include 540i xDrive, which comes with a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder that cranks out 335 horsepower (a 35-horse improvement from the current model) and 332 lb.-ft. of torque. It also has 0 to 60 mph time of 4.7 seconds.

The 540i will arrive in the U.S. in February while the M550i and 530e won’t make their way over until the spring.

During the Detroit show, BMW also will debut its latest crossover prototype, the Concept X2, which combines the brand’s crossover-based X design with that of a coupe to give the appearance of a low-to-the-ground stance while maintaining a comfortable ride height. A sloping roofline and rounded accents give the X2 a decidedly curvaceous lilt.

Battery power will be the focus of BMW’s NAIAS display, which will also include iPerformance, plug-in versions of its 7 Series and 3 Series sedans as well as its X5 crossover, all of which feature 2.0-liter twin-turbo inline four-cylinder engines and battery-powered motors capable of up to 14 miles of all-electric range. The 2017 versions of the 740e, 330e and X5 xDrive40e are all available currently for sale in the U.S. for about $90,000, $45,000 and $63,000, respectively.
