But before the current generation 911 is put to rest, Porsche might launch a limited edition 911 Speedster at the next month’s Frankfurt Motor Show.

The last hurrah of the 991 series 911, the Speedster would have a limited production run just like the previous Speedster. The last Speedster debuted in 2011, marking the end of the previous-generation 997-series 911.

The previous Speedster sported a shorter windscreen, a flat contour of the sporty-looking manual convertible top and the characteristic double bubble on the convertible top compartment lid. The rear track was 44mm wider than the standard 911 making the Speedster stand out of the usual 911 convertibles.

The Speedster moniker harks back at the original Porsche 356 Speedster, which first bore the name. Now the Stuttgart-based sports carmaker has been using the Speedster insignia to pay homage to the 356 with this collector’s edition convertible.

The new 911 Speedster will continue the tradition with a fatter bottom, distinctive body kit and a double bubble rear roof cover. It will be powered by the same powerplant as the 911 GTS, which is a twin turbo 3.0-litre flat six engine producing 450bhp and 550Nm. A manual transmission from the recently introduced 911 GT2 RS is expected as well.

It seems certain that the new 911 Speedster will be an expensive car. More details will surface as the Frankfurt Motor Show draws near. Stay tuned.
