Though they are not proper SUVs in terms of size but their rugged styling adds to their presence. Following the same concept, Mahindra have launched their new car, KUV100. This is basically a crossover hatch with SUV styling which will be placed as an alternative of premium hatchbacks. In-fact, it is not only Mahindra who took this idea seriously, Maruti Suzuki is also planning to enter this segment with their international offering, Ignis which can be manufactured in India and exported to other markets just like Baleno. How things could be when both these cars will face off each other? Let us find out.

Exterior styling

The KUV100 gets the styling cues from its premium elder siblings especially at front while the Ignis does not resemble any of its family member and has a unique presence. Both cars will be less than four meter in length and it will be the KUV100 which will be bigger in body size. The Ignis measures 3700mm in length, 1660mm in width and 1595mm in height while its higher ground clearance adds that masculine look to it. The KUV100 is relatively wider and taller than Ignis but marginally shorter at length of 3675mm, width of 1715mm and height of 1665mm. Both cars use LED technology in their headlamps, have massive wheel arches and are packed in square shaped body size. The Ignis has a more boxy shape while the KUV100 is full of curves.

The new KUV100 has two new 1.2L, 3-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. The 1.2L petrol engine will have a power output of 81.8bhp while the diesel engine will churn out a peak power of 76.4bhp. The engine line-up for the Indian version of Ignis is still not sure but looking at the current Maruti offerings we can expect Ignis to retain the 1.2L, 83bhp, K-series petrol engine and 1.3L, 74bhp multijet diesel engine from its siblings. Both cars will come standard with five-speed manual gearboxes however there are chances of an AMT gearbox in KUV100 in the later stage while the Ignis could surprise us with the CVT.

This will be a tough battle between KUV100 and Ignis as these features add highly to the overall value for money factor of any car and that is the reason why these both cars will be very well equipped. They will share few features such as electrically adjustable ORVMs, front fog lamps, rear de-fogger, wiper, adjustable power steering wheel, 2-Din music system with Bluetooth connectivity and steering mounted controls, rear parking sensors, remote locking, MID, keyless entry, Dual airbags and ABS with EBD. The KUV100 is said to be coming standard with dual airbags and ABS. The KUV will also have an advantage of six-seater arrangement unlike the conventional five-seating arrangement in the other cars. It will have a 3-seater bench at front which can be converted into central armrest when not needed.

That will be the biggest question on their fate and success in India as they will debut in a brand new segment which will have price conscious prospective buyers. Mahindra have priced the KUV100 very well with a starting price of Rs 4.4 lakhs while the top-end is Rs 6/8 lakh. Maruti would also be giving the Ignis a similar price-tag if not less considering how they priced the Baleno. The Ignis launch is still some time away and till that time, the KUV100 will have this whole segment to itself.
