Upcoming cars in India in 2017 under Rs 5 lakh

Car manufacturers are consistently coming up with new technologies and improved features. Moreover, the Government of India has announced that carmakers need to equip the vehicles with airbags and ABS as standard features across the variants from 2017. Passenger car sales in the last few months too has gone up, hinting at an end to the decline witnessed in the last few years. The year 2017 then seems to be a good year as it will experience many new and updated models by different manufacturers in the country. If you are planning to buy a new car next year but are not willing to spend more than Rs 5 lakh, we've got a list of such upcoming cars.

Datsun GO-Cross

After the launch of GO, GO+ MPV and redi-GO in India, Datsun will launch the GO-Cross compact SUV. The GO-Cross is based Nissan's V platform and will share some of the designing cues with the GO and GO+ MPV. The Datsun GO-Cross will get a new body design and features such as LED lights, roof rails, side body cladding and a roof mounted sporty spoiler. Under the hood, the Datsun GO-Cross is expected to get its power from a 1.2 litre, three-cylinder petrol engine that will produce 76 hp at 6,000 rpm and 104 Nm at 4,000 rpm.. The engine will be mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox and the company might also offer the compact SUV with Nissan's 1.5-litre dCi diesel, which also powers the Nissan Micra.

Expected Price: Rs 3.5 lakh to Rs 4.5 lakh, ex-showroom

Chevrolet Beat facelift

The upcoming Chevrolet Beat facelift will be based on the current Beat hatchback, but will get a few changes at the exterior as well as the interiors. The carmaker had earlier showcased the new Beat at the 2016 Auto Expo. The Beat facelift will continue to feature the hexagonal front grille with the 'Bowtie' positioned in the centre. The company has made changes to the headlamps and tail lamps to give it a sportier look. The cabin will boast of a dual tone black and grey theme and will also feature a blue illuminated console. Mechanically, the Chevrolet Beat facelift is likely to be powered by the same 1.0 litre three-cylinder turbocharged diesel and 1.2 litre four cylinder petrol engine, paired to a five-speed manual gearbox.

Expected Price: Rs 4.30 to Rs 6.50 lakh, ex-showroom

Chevrolet Beat Activ

Ahead of its launch in 2017, Chevrolet had showcased the Beat Activ concept at the 2016 Auto Expo held earlier this year. The new Chevrolet Beat Activ is a crossover version of the standard model and will be based on the 2017 Beat. The sportier-looking Beat Activ will have a high ground clearance as well as raised suspension by up to 15 mm and will have bigger alloy wheels than the standard version. The car will also get new headlamps, blackened bumpers and body graphics, while, the infotainment system will have a touchscreen and Bluetooth connectivity along with other equipment like reverse parking sensors, steering mounted audio controls and digital instrument cluster. The Chevrolet Beat Activ will get an 80 hp 1.2 litre petrol and 1.0 litre diesel unit that will produce around 57 hp of power. Both the mills will be paired to a five-speed manual transmission. The new Chevrolet Beat and Beat Activ will be manufactured at the company's plant at the Talegaon plant in Maharashtra.

Volkswagen Up

The Volkswagen Up, when and if launched in India will be an entry-level hatchback in the company's portfolio that will compete with the likes of the Hyundai i10 and the Honda Brio. The carmaker has not announced any details about engines, but we expect the Volkswagen Up to be powered by a 1.0 litre petrol engine that produces around 73 hp of power. The company might also launch the Up hatchback with a 1.2 litre diesel unit. Internationally, the Volkswagen Up is sold in three-door versions and a five-door model will head to the Indian shores. Volkswagen has also increased the wheelbase of the car than the three-door model, to offer ample cabin space.

Hyundai Eon facelift

Hyundai India is planning to launch the Eon facelift sometime in 2017. Under the hood, the Hyundai Eon facelift is expected to get the same 800cc and a 1.1 litre petrol engine. The current Eon is paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox and the carmaker might also offer the car with an AMT (Automatic Manual Transmission) due to the rising demand for the vehicle equipped with automatic transmission. The Eon facelift will boast of the company's 2.0 Fluidic Sculpture philosophy along with other new features at the exterior as well as at the interiors.
