Meghan Markle has caused a political storm after reportedly breaking royal protocol on the first day of her visit to Ireland.

The Duchess of Sussex and Prince Harry flew into Dublin airport on Tuesday evening via private jet for their first international visit as a married couple.

After meeting Taoiseach Leo Varadkar the couple attending a summer garden party held at the residency of the British Ambassador to Ireland.

While at the party the royals met some of Ireland’s most well-known faces, including the likes of Brian O’Driscoll and his wife Amy Huberman.

Meghan, 36, took the opportunity to discuss an important issue in regards to women’s rights with some of the attendees.

Journalist Una Mullaly and Senator Catherine Noone both claimed that Meghan had discussed the recent 8th Amendment referendum.

Sharing a photo of Meghan on Instagram, Una wrote: ‘Had a good chat with Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle about Repeal and the importance of her feminist activism.’

Senator Noone meanwhile, took to Twitter after the party to reveal what she had discussed with the Duchess, claiming she had shared support for the Yes campaign.

She said: ‘A pleasure to meet Prince Harry & the Duchess of Sussex at the British Ambassador’s Residence this evening.’

‘The Duchess & I had a chat about the recent referendum result. She watched with interest & was pleased to see the result,’ the Senator claimed, after the Yes vote secured change to the laws in Ireland on abortion.

Noone later deleted the tweet amid suggestions that Meghan had broken royal protocol by expressing political views.

The politician later clarified her words, and stated that it had been a ‘benign chat’ with Meghan and that she had expressed ‘no political opinion’.

‘It was a very benign chat, she expressed no political opinion. She was interested and charming.’

‘I deleted it because it was unintentionally misleading – the Duchess was not in any way political,’ Noone said.
