Slide 1 of 14

Ian McKellen with Judi Dench in Macbeth

Considering that Ian McKellen can call himself the proud owner of six Laurence Olivier Awards, a Golden Globe, a Tony, a SAG, a BIF, two Saturn awards, four Drama Desk Awards and two Critics' Choice awards, we think it's fair to assume any film fan worth their salt will be familiar with his work.Ian's career started in the late 1950s, where he took to the stage while studying at Cambridge University, and after a mere few years on the theatre circuit, he joined Laurence Olivier's National Theatre Company in London. He soon became a theatre favourite and was cast as the lead in Laurence Olivier's Macbeth opposite Judi Dench in 1976.Given that he's got one of the most admired acting careers around, we thought it's only fitting we celebrate his 75th birthday (25 May) with a look back at his illustrious career.
