Movie characters resurrected: Sigourney Weaver returns to Avatar

Sigourney Weaver is set to return to Avatar for the three new sequels, despite the fact her character died in the 2009 box office smash. The director James Cameron said in a statement that she would portray a new character in the trio of follow-up films. The Canadian filmmaker has always had a close relationship with the actress: “Sigourney and I have a long creative history, dating back to 1985 when we made Aliens. We're good friends who've always worked well together, so it just feels right that she's coming back for the Avatar sequels.”Weaver hinted in 2012 that her character Grace Augustine might be making a comeback: “Jim says no one ever dies in science fiction,” she said. This isn’t the first time the 64-year-old has reprised her role from the dead and it probably won’t be the last as she is said to be returning to the role of musician Dana Barrett in a forthcoming third Ghostbusters movie. She won’t be alone in returning to Avatar as there are rumours her co-star Stephen Lang may be back as villain Colonel Quaritch, despite also been killed in the first movie. Resurrecting characters, whether it's to a movie franchise or within a film itself, is nothing new to Hollywood as we showcase here...
