Pumpkin spice latte recipe: How to make it at home

USA TODAY logo USA TODAY 10-09-2019 Kristopher Juniel, MakeItGrateful.com

Praise be to the pumpkin spice gods, because PSL season has officially arrived. There’s no point in denying it — you’ve been waiting all year for the PSL to rain down like manna from the heavens and wash over you in all your basicness. Oh wait, maybe that’s just us.

Regardless, pumpkin-everything season is upon us, heralding the return of Starbucks highly anticipated PSL. And while we’ll be the first to admit we’ve been known to guzzle that beloved fall beverage with wild abandon, we wanted to shake things up a bit this year with a healthier pumpkin spice latte so you can enjoy your favorite fall drink guilt-free.

We probably don’t have to tell you that buying a PSL from the ‘Bux every morning (and every afternoon, no judgment) will put a dent in your bank account. Plus, there’s the fact that — although we do enjoy indulging — store-bought coffee beverages are chock-full of sugar and artificial ingredients.

But since the PSL is an integral part of us proclaiming the glory of fall to all who’ll listen, we had to find a suitable and less-sugary alternative.

What you’ll need to whip up this healthier DIY treat:

  • Pumpkin puree
  • Maple syrup, or any other natural sugar/sugar substitute
  • Vanilla (powder or extract)
  • Pumpkin pie spice
  • Coffee
  • Milk (we used unsweetened oat, but any unsweetened milk will do)
  • Optional: whip cream, cinnamon sticks
  • Helpful: mocha pot, French press

There you have it! It only takes a few minutes to earn your proverbial barista merit badge. Now, go forth, drape yourself in a cozy blanket (and your unabashed basicness, natch), and sip that DIY healthier PSL to your heart’s content.
