The idea of self-reliance is steeped in India’s history from the time that Mahatma Gandhi seeded the thought of economic model driven by community participation and the maximization of social welfare. The COVID-19 pandemic has made governments around the world put more focus on the idea of economic nationalism. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the Atmanirbhar Bharat plan as part of India’s efforts to tackle the devastating economic impact of the pandemic. In the last six months the government has announced schemes to push ‘Make in India’. Corporate India has aligned itself to the government’s plan. Leading the charge is ITC, which has been actively contributing to the idea of ‘Nation First’, and its slogan of ‘Sab Saath Badhien’ is more than just a tag line, it is a business strategy that guides its decision-making. This was the central theme for the Curtain Raiser for ITC presents #SwabhimanBharat, a Network18 initiative, where ITC’s Chairman and Managing Director, Sanjiv Puri shared his company’s vision for an equitable and inclusive India with Shereen Bhan, Managing Editor, CNBC-TV18.
