Attacks in Kupwara: A timeline of recent terror incidents

New Delhi: Three Indian Army personnel, including a captain, have been killed and four others injured after suspected Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) militants attacked an army camp at Panjgaon in Kupwara district of north Kashmir on early Thursday morning. The army camp serves as an artillery base and is located quite close to the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir.

While two militants were killed in the retaliatory action, a search operation is currently ongoing to determine if there are more terrorists in the area. Injured personnel have been shifted to Srinagar for better medical assistance.

Meanwhile, according to an ANI report, stone pelters were seen hurling stones and bricks at army personnel near the site of the terror attack in Kupwara to disturb their movement.

Here are some of the recent major terror attacks in Kupwara District since 2014.

■ 10 April 2017: Army foiled infiltration bid on the LoC in Keran sector of Kupwara District, killing four terrorists. No army causalities were reported in the attack.

■ 15 March: Three Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants and a minor girl were killed while another minor boy and a SF person were injured in an encounter at Hyhama area of Kupwara District of North Kashmir.

■ 14 February: Three militants were killed and an Army Major was injured in Handwara area in Kupwara District.

■ 4 January: Security forces arrested a LeT militant from Handwara area of North Kashmir in Kupwara District, who was planning to carry out attack on security convoys in the area.

■ 18 January 2016: Police arrested an OGW of Al-Badar militant outfit in Handwara area in Kupwara District.

■ 21 January: Army busted a militant hideout near the LoC in Kupwara District, and recovered five IEDs.

■ 29 January: A militant was killed in an encounter that broke out between militants and security forces in Lolab area in Kupwara District.

■ 30 January: Two LeT militants were killed during an encounter in North Kashmir’s Lolab area in Kupwara District.

■ 3 February: Three JeM militants were arrested as Police busted a module of JMB in Handwara town of Kupwara District.

■ 12-13 February: Five militants of LeT including their ‘commander’ and two Army personnel, were killed, while two Army personnel including an officer were injured during an encounter in Chowkibal forest area of North Kashmir’s Kupwara District. The encounter started on 12 February and continued throughout the night and in the morning.

■ 24 February: Police and Army arrested a Fidayeen of JeM, Mohammad Sadiq Gujjar, who carried out an attack on 25 November 2015, along with his three associates at an Army camp near the LoC in the Tanghdar area of Kupwara District. His three associates Hussain, Malik and Rizwan were killed inside Army camp at Tanghdar on 25 November.

■ 3 March: One militant was killed and two Army personnel were injured as Army foiled a major infiltration bid on the LoC in North Kashmir’s Keran sector in Kupwara District of Jammu and Kashmir.

■ 18 March: Security forces killed two LeT militants in an encounter in Handwara town in Kupwara District. The two killed militants were part of the five militants of LeT who were killed by forces in Chowkibal forest area of North Kashmir’s Kupwara District on 13 February earlier.

■ 31 March: Security forces arrested a local militant from Langate area of Handwara in Kupwara District. Sources said Police along with army’s 21 RR arrested the militant identified as Tasaduq Ahmad Pir of Bakihakar village in Handwara area during a search operation.

■ 6 April: A militant of LeT was killed during an encounter in North Kashmir Lolab forests in Kupwara District, while SFs have launched massive searches against his colleagues who fled from security cordon.

■ 21 April: Three LeT militants were killed in an encounter with SFs at Lolab in Kupwara District.

■ 6 May: Army foiled a major infiltration bid by heavily armed militants along LoC in Kupwara Sector of Kupwara District, in which one Army trooper was killed.

■ 11 May: An Army trooper was killed in an encounter with militants in a forest area of Kupwara District.

■ 17 May: One militant was killed in an encounter between SFs and militants in Zunrishi Chowkibal forest area in Kupwara District.

■ 21 May: Five militants of JeM, including their ‘commander’, were killed in a fierce gun battle in Drugmulla village in Kupwara District, while two Army personnel were injured. Sources said that they were Fidayeen and had recently infiltrated into Kashmir and one of their members was killed in Zunreshi forests of Kupwara early this week, on 16 May while the others fled under the cover of darkness. One injured Army trooper succumbed to his injuries in Kupwara District.

■ 14 June: One Army soldier and one militant were killed in an encounter with a group of terrorists intercepted by the Army near the LoC in Kupwara District when they were trying to infiltrate from PoK. Five soldiers were injured in the operation. Later, one succumbed to his injuries.

■ 16 June: Army foiled a major infiltration bid along the LoC in Tanghdar sector of Kupwara District by killing four heavily armed militants while one Army personal also lost his life.

■ 23 June: Three militants were killed in an encounter in Kupwara District.

■ 7 July: Army launched an operation against militants after they said that their patrol party was fired upon in Mawar area of Langate in Kupwara District.

■ 23 July: A soldier was killed and another injured in an encounter between a group of infiltrators and Army at Gogledar in Furkian sector along LoC in Kupwara District.

■ 21 August: Army shot dead three militants along the LoC near Sadna Top in Tanghdar sector at Nachin village in Kupwara District. The three militants had targeted a border post of BSF on August 19, in which three BSF personnel were injured.

■ 7 September: Three soldiers were injured when militants attacked an army convoy in Handwara area in Kupwara District. The army convoy was attacked by militants at Kralgund along Kupwara-Baramulla highway in Handwara area when it was on its way to Srinagar.

■ 19 September: One terrorist was killed in an attack on a Police post in the Langate area of Handwara in Kupwara District. This took place a day after the terrorist attack on an Army camp in Uri that killed 18 soldiers.

■ 6 October: Three militants were reportedly killed after they attacked an Army camp in Langate in Kupwara District.

■ 31 May 2015: Army foiled fidayeen attack on its Brigade headquarters in Tanghdar sector of Kupwara District of J&K by killing four members of six heavily armed militants.

■ 22 July: Three militants were killed and an Army soldier was injured in a fierce gun battle at Eagle post in Tanghdar sector of Kupwara District of J&K.

■ 8 August: One Territorial Army (TA) soldier was killed and three other Para-commandos were injured in a fierce gun battle that started at Taya Top in Tanghdar sector of the LoC in the frontier District of Kupwara in J&K.

■ 14 October: Three Army personnel were injured in a grenade attack in Kupwara town in the District. Militants hurled a grenade towards an Army bunker outside the compound of Army’s 41 RR Town Commander near the Kupwara Bus Stand. Three Army personnel were injured in the grenade attack and six private vehicles and an army vehicle was damaged in the attack.

■ 25 November: Three JeM militants and a generator operator of MES were killed in an encounter when a group of heavily armed militants attacked Army camp near LoC at Tanghdar in North Kashmir’s Kupwara District. Two Army officers were also injured in the attack and several Army barracks, vehicles and kerosene depot were gutted in the encounter that lasted several hours.
