New Delhi: Trounced in elections to the 16th Lok Sabha, the Indian National Congress may just scrape through and qualify to become the main opposition party.

At 12.30pm, the party was leading in 61 of 526 Lok Sabha seats for which details were available (elections were held to 543 seats).

According to Indian law, a party needs to get at least 10% of the seats in the house. If leads translate into wins, the Congress would have just scraped through. It is unclear who the leader of the opposition will be.

At 12:30 pm, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by Narendra Modi, was leading in 263 seats.
