Chennai: The opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’s (DMK) no-confidence motion against the speaker of the Tamil Nadu assembly P. Dhanapal was defeated on Thursday.

The motion, which was moved after pandemonium in the assembly during last month’s trust vote to prove chief minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami enjoyed majority support, was defeated with 122 votes against it and 97 for it.

The motion was defeated both during voice vote and later by division of votes. Legislators from the former chief minister’s O. Panneerselvam’s camp were absent during the no-confidence motion against speaker.

Palaniswami won the trust vote on 18 February by a 122-11 margin in the 234-member assembly following ruckus in the house following which DMK legislators were evicted and its ally Congress walked out.
