Has Jio Summer Surprise offer ended after TRAI order? Yes and no because it's complicated

In an abrupt announcement Jio on Thursday evening said that it was killing its Summer Surprise offer, which the company had earlier announced on March 31. The decision, says Jio, was taken after it was "advised" by TRAI. By the "advise" it seems that TRAI has told Jio that its Summer Surprise offer, which provided Jio users with effectively three more months of free service, was probably irregular. Hence, it needs to be shut down.

Reliance Jio 4G plans: Here’s what you pay and what you get: Reliance Jio's free services will come to an end on April 15, which means after this date, users will have to pay to continue using company's data services. The company has listed various prepaid and postpaid plans on its site, which users can recharge with in order to continue using Jio 4G data. Also, it is advisable you become a Jio Prime member before April 15 as Jio is offering much more data at cheaper prices to its Prime members compared to non-Prime members.Take a look at all prepaid plans that Jio has for its Prime as well as non-Prime members.Remember, voice calls to any network whether local, STD or roaming are free. Also local, STD and roaming SMSes to all operators are free except for Rs 149 plan, which has a limit of 300 SMSes and a validity of 28 days. Now, the interesting bit here is how Jio is closing the Summer Surprise Offer. It has ended, and it has not ended. At least not with the immediate effect. Even after the TRAI "advise" Jio is taking its own sweet time, and doing a bit of wordplay, when it comes to closing the Summer Surprise offer. In a note that Jio issued on Thursday night, here is what it said:

"Jio is in the process of fully complying with the regulator's advice, and will be withdrawing the 3 months complimentary benefits of JIO SUMMER SURPRISE as soon as operationally feasible, over the next few days."

Read these lines again and now focus on the part that is in bold. The two words -- operationally feasible -- and "next few days" are the key to read between the lines here. But then it gets better. Now read this:

"However, all customers who have subscribed to JIO SUMMER SURPRISE offer prior to its discontinuation will remain eligible for the offer."

The key part here is "prior to its discontinuation". What all of this mean? It means that Jio Summer Surprise offer has not ended. Not yet. In fact, the TRAI "advise" may end up helping Jio.

Now connect the dots. What Jio here is saying that instead of ending on April 15, the Summer Surprise offer will end in the next few days. Today is April 6. Tomorrow is Friday, and after that weekend. It is possible that Jio Summer Surprise may end only by Monday because before that it may not be "operationally feasible" to close it. That date then will be end of day on April 9 or April 10. This means the Jio offer will end around 5 to 6 days before it was supposed to end. Hardly a big loss to Jio.

In the meantime, for Jio users here is how it works out:

Those already have Summer Surprise offer: The users who have already got the Prime membership and have done their Rs 303 or higher value recharge, will get the Summer Surprise offer. This means for them Jio services are going to be free for another three months.

Those who get before the window closes: Those who get the Jio Prime membership and do a Rs 303 recharge now before Jio can close the offer as and when it is "operationally feasible" will also get the Summer Surprise offer and free Jio services for three months.

Advantage Jio: In other words, the TRAI "advise" may end up benefiting Jio because it may nudge and push the fence sitter to get the Prime membership and avail the Summer Surprise offer. In any case, according to Reliance over 72 million Jio users have already taken. Those who still don't get it will anyways were not going to take it, whether the offer ends on April 15 or on April 30.
