Amritsar: A mammoth tricolour, believed to be the largest in the country with the tallest flagpost, has been inaugurated at the Indo-Pak Attari Border in Amritsar.

Punjab minister Anil Joshi on Sunday inaugurated the flag measuring 110 metres (360 ft) in length, 24 metres in width and weighing 55 tonnes. The flagpost, which stands 110 metres tall, now outflanks the 91.44 metres (300 ft) high tricolour in Ranchi which was till now considered the tallest in the country.

The mast, which has been installed just 150 metres away from the border, became an attraction for the thousands of tourists who had reached there to watch the Beating Retreat Ceremony at sunset.

Built at an approximate cost of Rs3.50 crore, it was a project of the Amritsar Improvement Trust Authority of the Punjab government. Joshi told reporters that it was his dream project which has now turned into reality.

“With the Model Code of Conduct for the Assembly elections being in place in the state, the minister got special permission from the Election Commission for the inauguration,” officials said. Amritsar already has a 170 ft tall flag in the local Ranjit Avenue Public Park. Plans to hoist the colossal tricolour on Republic Day were delayed due to some technical reasons.
