LG has unveiled its latest flagship smartphone, the G6, at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

The South Korean electronics company has moved away from the modular design of its previous flagship, the G5, claiming to offer "a back-to-basics approach to premium smartphones".

The main selling point of the new handset is its display, which offers an ultra wide-screen aspect ratio and cinematic viewing experience, according to LG.

Here's everything you need to know about LG's new smartphone.

Complete coverage of Mobile World Congress 2017

Design

The LG G6 is a plus-sized device with a 5.7-inch display and an aluminium and glass body.

The metal frame that wraps around the perimeter of the phone has a soft matte finish and rounded corners, and the back is perfectly flat, with no camera bump.

The display takes up almost the entire front of the phone, with very narrow bezels, so despite the large screen size, it is relatively comfortable to hold in one hand.

LG said that the upper bezel was minimised by rearranging the camera, sensor and speaker in a row on the front upper side. The fingerprint sensor is located on the back of the phone.

The LG G6 comes in black, platinum and white.

Display

The LG G6 has a "Quad HD+" display with a resolution of 2,880 x 1,440.

For the first time ever in a smartphone, it has an 18:9 screen aspect ratio, rather than the conventional 16:9, which LG claims offers more viewing space and a more immersive experience when streaming videos and playing games.

The display also supports Dolby Vision and HDR 10 - both of which are standards for High Dynamic Range (HDR) - meaning both the darkest and the brightest areas of the picture are more vivid, revealing greater detail.

Both Netflix and Amazon have increased the amount of HDR content they offer on their video streaming services in recent months, and Amazon will also increasingly create 18:9 content for a cinematic viewing experience on the LG G6.

Camera

The LG G6 has dual 13MP rear cameras, one of which has a 125-degree wide-angle lens, allowing users to switch between standard and wide-angle settings and capture panoramic shots.

Users can zoom in and out between the wide-angle and standard camera lenses, even during 4K video capture. They can also choose to shoot in different aspect ratios including 1:1 (square), 4:3, 16:9 and 18:9.

The G6 also comes with an expanded 100-degree field of view with its 5MP front camera, which means users can take wide-angle selfies without the need for a selfie stick.

When reviewing photos, G6 offers a split screen view, so users can also take pictures in 1:1 ratio in one window, while checking, editing and uploading pictures in another window immediately after shooting.

Users can also create GIFs by combining between 2 and 100 photos from the gallery.

Specs

The LG G6 comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor, 4GB of memory and a choice of 32GB or 64GB of internal memory, which is expandable up to 2TB with a MicroSD card.

It has a non-removable 3,300mAh battery.

Software

The G6 ships with the latest version of Google's mobile operating system, Android 7.0 Nougat.

It also comes with Google's artificially intelligent virtual helper, Google Assistant, built in - allowing users to manage everyday tasks, control their music and videos and search the G6 using voice commands.

Thanks to Google's machine learning algorithms, the more Google Assistant is used, the more personalised it becomes.

Other features

The G6 is water and dust resistant, with a rating of IP68, meaning it can be immersed in up to 1.5 meters of water for as long as 30 minutes.

LG has gone to some effort to ensure the phone doesn't overheat, installing an internal heat pipe to dissipate heat and positioning the components most prone to overheating as far from each other as possible.

Price and availability

LG is yet to confirm the release date and pricing for the G6 in the UK. However, a number of mobile operators have confirmed that they will be stocking the device.

EE, Vodafone, Three and Carphone Warehouse have all announced that pre-orders are open or will open soon. We'll update this article when we know more.
