The recently concluded season of Khatron Ke Khiladi on Colors TV has been inspirational for this couch potato—enough to head to Delhi Rock, an indoor rock-climbing studio that opened in the Capital earlier this month.

Delhi Rock is in a refurbished underground parking lot. Designed to simulate the outdoors (pebble stones line the floors under the climbing walls), it offers multiple activities. There are three climbing walls—the Beginners wall, the Arch and the Shaft (55ft). There is training equipment to help seasoned climbers improve grip and arm strength. The Arch can be used for bouldering, lead climbing and aerial dance. “This space is a gym that will encourage physical fitness through climbing, yoga and other arts like aerial acts. I have seen that climbers don’t really take general fitness into account, so yoga classes will help in flexibility and conditioning, as will dance. Later in the year we will introduce outdoor activities like group-climbing expeditions to Dhauj (near Faridabad),” says Anuraag Tiwari, the founder of Delhi Rock.

The good stuff

An instructor did some basic stretching exercises with us, explaining how these help in the climb. Our climbing instructor, Ganesh, then took over. We were given shoes (for a better grip on the wall, climbing shoes should be a size or two smaller than your regular size) and a sit harness (there are three kinds, but this is the most appropriate for the Beginners wall). The technique used in our climb was belaying (the rope is secured at one end and a climbing partner ensures the correct tension on the rope at all times). The climb itself was not hard, though we couldn’t get more than 10ft off the ground. Ganesh told us how to use our lower body rather than straining our arms. This studio is a must-try if you want to get introduced to climbing as a sport.

Delhi Rock offers lessons in Vinyasa yoga, climbing sessions for the 7-14 age group, as well as circus arts (for adults and children)—gymnastic rings, exercise balls, ropes, aerial skills.

The not-so-good

It was really hot in the hall, perhaps because our arrival was not scheduled and the air conditioning had not been switched on. They should consider short, half-hour trial sessions for newcomers at half the cost. We found it difficult to spend an hour and a half (`1,000) on climbing in our first session.

Talk plastic

Drop-in sessions cost `1,000 for an individual and `2,000 for a family of five maximum (two adults, three children)—it’s like having a day pass that allows you to participate in any session between 3-10pm. Monthly membership is `5,000 for an individual and includes gear rental (shoes and harness) for the first month. It is advisable to schedule sessions.

Delhi Rock, classes are from 3-10pm (Mondays closed). For details, click here or call 9650443377.
