Markets Live: Sensex, Nifty open lower, Unitech shares fall 3%

The Sensex opens lower. The broader Nifty, too, falls on the week’s last session. Indian rupee, tracking Asian currencies, falls against the US dollar. The shares of Reliance Industries Ltd and Unitech Ltd fall, while those of Sobha Ltd rise.

9.38am: BSE Sensex trades lower by 104 points, or 0.35%, to 29,823, while the Nifty 50 falls 37 points, or 0.39%, to 9,225.

9.30am: Reliance Industries Ltd shares fall 1% to Rs1,423.20 after Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd said on Thursday that it was withdrawing its “summer surprise” offer of free services in April-June, heeding a directive from the telecom regulator. Other telecom stocks gained. Idea Cellular Ltd rose 2%, Bharti Airtel Ltd rose 2%.

9.25am: Sobha Ltd shares rise 1.7% to Rs 410 after huge block deal. Around 3.9% stake of the company changed hands in a block deal, Bloomberg reported. However, details of the buyers and sellers were not known.

9.22am: The 10-year bond yield was trading at 6.819%, compared to its previous close of 6.769%. Bond yields and prices move in opposite directions

9.20am: Unitech Ltd shares fall 3.2% to Rs 5.85 after a Delhi court on Thursday dismissed the bail plea of both the promoters in the Unitech matter and sent them to judicial custody till April 20.

9.15am: The rupee opened at 64.70 a dollar and touched a low of 64.71. At 9.15am, the home currency was trading at 64.64, down 0.17% from its Thursday’s close of 64.54.

9.10am: Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd shares fall 1.6% to Rs 350.20 after broking firm Goldman has cut the rating to Neutral from Buy.

9.00am: Asian currencies were trading lower. Taiwan dollar was down 0.36%, South Korean won 0.35%, Thai baht 0.23%, China offshore 0.11%, Indonesian rupiah 0.11%, Philippines peso 0.07% and Singapore dollar 0.05%.
