Maruti Suzuki’s domestic sales rise 16% in May

Mumbai: Maruti Suzuki India Ltd, India’s largest car maker by sales, reported a 16% increase in its domestic sales in May, the company said in a statement.

The local arm of the Japanese car maker sold 90,560 units compared with 77,821 units a year ago.

Sales growth was led by a 53% increase in the so-called compact car segment, which includes the Swift, Celerio, Ritz and Estilo. Maruti launched the Celerio, India’s first car with automated manual transmission technology, in February. It currently has a waiting period of four to six months for some select variants.

With the exception of the mini- and mid-size segments, company’s sales across all other categories including utility vehicles, vans and super compact segment expanded during the month.

Exports also rose to 10,365 units in May, a 51% increase compared with last year.

At 10:51am, Maruti’s shares were up 2.39% to `2,323.85 apiece. The benchmark Sensex was up 0.61% to 24,366.11 points.
