Huawei has lifted the lid on two lithium-ion prototype batteries, which have the potential to fill a smartphone with power in a handful of minutes without negatively impacting on battery life.

Of the two prototypes, the lower capacity battery (600mAh) can be charged by 68% in two minutes and the higher capacity battery (3,000mAh), which could offer ten hours of activity for a smartphone, can be charged by 48% in five minutes.

Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3 technology currently allows handsets to be injected with power in around half an hour, but can have a negative effect on battery life and capacity. Huawei allegedly uses anodes coated with graphite atoms in its new batteries, which help to preserve the battery while charging.

While the prototypes currently need a bulky charging station to work, and require you to remove the battery from the phone, if Huawei develops a slimmer model – or an eventual in-built quick charge battery – it could end up smashing the limitations on smartphone battery life.
