Mitsubishi Motors Corp. said it called back more than 920,000 vehicles worldwide over a defect related to light switches.

The car maker recalled about 703,888 of the cars in Japan, including the 2003-2008 eK Wagon and Pajero models, the transportation ministry said in a statement on Thursday. The defective cars represent more than twice the number the Tokyo-based car maker delivered in the country last fiscal year.

The recall is the biggest for Mitsubishi Motors since the Japanese transport ministry issued a warning in December 2012 saying the car maker was passive in handling recalls over engine-oil leaks. Mitsubishi Motors called back 1.76 million vehicles over the oil defect.

No accidents were reported related to the light switch defects, according to the transport ministry statement.

The recall includes some vehicles Mitsubishi Motors makes for Nissan Motor Co.

Mitsubishi Motors produces rebadged minicars including the eK Wagon and eK Custom for Nissan. The two car makers set up a joint venture last year to develop minicars to compete with Honda Motor Co. and Suzuki Motor Corp. in a segment that makes up 40% of Japan’s new car sales. Bloomberg
