After making a triumphant entrance in New Delhi on Saturday, Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) prime ministerial elect Narendra Modi arrived in Varanasi—the constituency where he won Lok Sabha elections. He will shortly offer prayers to the Ganges river.

Friday’s election results showed BJP has won the first majority in Parliament for 30 years after Modi’s campaign focused on delivering new jobs, development and clean governance. BJP on its own won 282 seats while its National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured 336. Congress was reduced to its lowest ever tally of 44 seats.

The triumph redrew India’s political map, handing him a huge mandate for change, and heaping humiliation on the ruling Gandhi political dynasty whose Congress party has been in power for 10 years.
