Nokia 3310 first look: It's love at first sight and price won't matter

India Today logo India Today 26-04-2017

Nokia 3310 is coming soon. Although this is not a phone that will define the future of Nokia, or rather HMD Global that is using the brand now, this is definitely one of those rare phones that are going to turn heads when you carry it in your hand. It is also a phone that is going to help HMD Global draw attention to its more important phones like the Nokia 6, Nokia 5 and the Nokia 3, which will also launch in India before the end of June along with the Nokia 3310.

The reason is simple: The Nokia 3310 is a phone that is going to make you fall in love with it at first sight. It's cute, bubbly, youthful, light and yet is exotic. More significantly, in a world full of big smartphones that are all screen and metal, the Nokia 3310 is a feature phone. It is meant to be a homage to an era that is long gone, and it does exactly that with its simplicity, reminding users of times when phones were easy to use and had some very specific purposes.

It's not old Nokia 3310. It's new

This is the kind of impression I got recently when I had a chance to try out the Nokia 3310. The software it was running wasn't the final build. Yet, it was a device that was very very close to what you would see in the market. And when you do hold it, this is what you will see.

You will also realise when you hold it that the new Nokia 3310 is so different from the old Nokia 3310. The biggest difference is in its design. While the original Nokia 3310 was somewhat thicker and monolithic, the new Nokia 3310 is a very light phone. It is also slimmer, possibly because the components that go into phones now have not only become smaller but also take less space even though they have become faster. In that ways, the new Nokia 3310 is a more of the fresh, modern take on an old phone, instead of being just a replica of the earlier 3310.

This is for the good because the new Nokia 3310 looks appetisingly fresh. It has overly rounded edges, and an almost pebble shape design. The older 3310 too had rounded edges, but the new one has a design that is just so much humane and inviting. The fact that it is also small ensures that it fits in palm just so effortlessly.

The build quality of the phone is fantastic. It is made of plastic but the keys have that soft feel that was so unique to the older Nokia phones. There are no creaking parts, no loose buttons on this phone.

Although the design is nice and so is the build quality. the real appeal of the Nokia 3310 is in the way it all comes together. When I held it first time, I took an instant liking to it. It's cute, sure. But the reason why the Nokia 3310 is going to appeal to a lot of users is because it is anti-thesis of a smartphone. It is simple, light and uncomplicated. After years of smartphone use, this feels like such a welcome change.

Though, let me be very clear about one thing here: new Nokia 3310 is not the future. It is the past, despite its futuristic design with pebble like curves. But the nostalgia, the exotic bit that is attached to it has enough of a pull that will entice not only the Nokia fans but also all those smartphone users who find today's phones unnecessarily complicated.

As far as the usage is concerned, the Nokia 3310 works just like a feature phone of old days. Although it does have a colour screen, which is also slightly larger compared to what the world used to gaze at in early 2000, the era when original Nokia 3310 was such a rage. There is the same interface that old Nokia phones had. The software is smooth. There is similar contacts app. There are similar games, including a revamped Snake game, which I didn't fancy too much. There is even a rear camera! And then there is the classical T9 keyboard.

Nokia 3310 price and India launch

Now, this something I don't know right now. Although I do have some idea. As far as the launch date is concerned, the Nokia 3310 will launch in India before the end of June. That much Nokia has confirmed. There are talks of the Nokia 3310 launching in April, to be specific April 28, but that is not accurate. In India, it will come around the same time when the Nokia 6, the Nokia 3 and the Nokia 5 launch.

As far as the price is concerned, nothing is certain right now. The global price of the phone is expected to be around Euros 49, which is around Rs 3,500. But supply for this phone is going to be tight and the demand high so the price could be as high as Rs 5,000 in India.

But the price actually doesn't matter. The Nokia 3310 is not a phone that most people will buy to use it actively. They will buy it because they will want to buy it, to keep it alongside their smartphones. The fact that this is an appealing phone, in terms of its design and a glorious past, ensures that you will crave. After spending some time with it, I know I will. It just looks so good and feels so nice in hands. Whether the price is Rs 3,500 or Rs 5,000 I am buying the Nokia 3310.
