New Delhi: The British government has certified India’s request for fugitive industrialist Vijay Mallya’s extradition, says the Ministry of External Affairs.

The Indian government made a formal request to the UK High Commission for Mallya’s extradition. India is seeking Mallya’s extradition on charges of wilful loan default and other financial irregularities.

Mallya fled to Britain last year after facing debt recovery cases in Indian courts by banks. Overall, Mallya owes over Rs9,000 crore to different banks, including the State Bank of India, as part of loans extended to his now-defunct Kingfisher Airline.

Despite multiple court injunctions, he has failed to appear before investigators.
