No you didn’t jump six weeks into the future–and we haven’t lost the plot. But you did read that headline right. In this article we’re going to look at how the newly announced Samsung Galaxy Note 7 compares to this year’s upcoming iPhone 7 Plus: two phones that will be the behemoths, both physically and metaphorically, of the smartphone market.

Why? Just for kicks, mainly. But also because though the official specs for the iPhone 7 Plus won’t be released until next month, rumors have been steady, so we have a pretty good idea of what it will be like. But please do keep in mind that this VS is just hypothetical right now based on the best rumors of the iPhone 7 Plus that are available. Obviously we can’t predict the future, so it’s possible Apple could add or subtract to/from the features of the iPhone 7 Plus.

Nevertheless, it is pretty easy to make accurate guesses about the type of specs Apple’s upcoming iPhone 7 Plus model will feature. Firstly, because Apple tends to do things pretty predictably. Second, there have been TONS of leaks about the iPhone 7. So much so that we now have a pretty accurate idea about what this handset will be like — and, spoiler alert: it’s not going to look much different from the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s. All the big design changes are coming in 2017, apparently.

This year’s iPhone — the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus — will feature a heavily updated camera, which is great, alongside beefed up internals courtesy of Apple’s brand new A10 CPU, which should, once again, deliver blistering performance and efficiencies across the board. Beyond this there is talk of new, high-end storage capacities and the discontinuation of 16GB iPhones, which, if we’re honest, cannot happen soon enough.

So without further ado, let's gaze into our crystal ball to see how the current Galaxy Note 7 will compare with this year’s rumored iPhone 7 Plus, starting with the specs:

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 vs Rumored iPhone 7 Plus: Major Specs

Samsung Galaxy Note 7

Display: 5.7in, 2560x1440 pixel QHD, 518 ppi, Corning Gorilla Glass 5Storage: 64GB + expansion via MicrosSD for another 256GBCPU: Samsung Exynos Octa 8890 (64-bit); Quad-Core 2.3GHz Exynos M1 "Mongoose" + Quad-Core 1.6GHz ARM Cortex-A53RAM: 4GBFront Camera: 5MPRear Camera: 12MP with OISOther: S-Pen Capacitive Stylus, IP68 Water And Dust Proofing, Fingerprint Scanner, Iris Scanner

Likely iPhone 7 Plus

Display: 5.5in with a QHD display of 2560 x 1440 resolution, Corning Gorilla Glass 5Storage: 32, 128, and 256GBCPU: A10 processorRAM: 3GBFront Camera: 5MP with wide angle lensRear Camera: Dual lens 12MP, OISOther: Smart Connector, Waterproof, Fingerprint Scanner, 3D Touch

As far as specs go you can expect the iPhone 7 Plus to see a new A10 processor and M10 motion-coprocessor. They’ll no doubt be an improvement over the A9/M9 found in the current iPhone 6s Plus, but by how much, who knows? If you go by averages, you can expect about a 20% speed bump from the processor. How that compares to the blazing fast processors found in the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 is yet to be seen.

It’s likely that the iPhone 7 Plus will boast 3GB of RAM, though Apple doesn’t like making RAM upgrades every year. However, because of the lack of major design changes expected to the iPhone 7 Plus, Apple’s going to have to add some pretty good internal changes to get people to upgrade. 3GB of RAM could do the trick. Still, if Apple does bump the RAM up to 3GB, it will still be 25% less than the 4GB found in the Galaxy Note 7.

As for storage options, with the iPhone 7 Plus we finally expect Apple to drop the 16GB entry level option for a 32GB entry level model. But what’s really interesting is the iPhone 7 could feature up to 256GB of storage space. If Apple keeps with its current 3-tier storage offerings, that means the iPhone 7 could come in 32, 128, and 256GB models. The Note 7 only comes with a standard 64GB storage built in, but it does offer a MicroSD card slot that not takes up to 256GB of storage. If you’re the person who likes to expand their storage at will, the Note 7 is the winner here.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 vs Rumored iPhone 7 Plus: Other features

Perhaps one of the biggest “other” features of the iPhone 7 Plus could be that it may gain a new port: the Smart Connector. Currently this Smart Connector is found on the iPad Pro like and allows smart accessories like keyboards to be attached. It’s possible Apple may be planning a mini-keyboard accessory for the iPhone 7 Plus. This Smart Connector would set it apart from the Note 7 for power users.

However, the Note 7 offers something the iPhone 7 Plus won’t: iris scaring for secure biometric login. Both phones feature fingerprint readers and will feature waterproofing.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 vs Rumored iPhone 7 Plus: Displays

The iPhone 7 Plus is expected to come in 5.5in with a QHD display of 2560 x 1440 resolution and a Corning Gorilla Glass 5 screen. Note that that is almost the exact same as the Note 7. The difference here between the displays is two thing: the Note 7 is 0.2in larger at 5.7in and the iPhone 7 Plus will have a 3D Touch display.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 vs Rumored iPhone 7 Plus: Cameras

The iPhone 7 Plus is expected to retain its current 5MP front camera and 12MP rear camera, which matches the cameras on the Note 7. The rear camera of each device will also support optical image stabilization. All same so far, right?

Well hold tight because the iPhone 7 Plus is expected to get one major camera upgrade the Note 7 doesn’t have: a dual lens rear camera. This would mean there would be TWO 12MP cameras on the back of the iPhone which will take insanely detailed pics.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 vs Rumored iPhone 7 Plus: Verdict

From a spec standpoint, the Note 7 wins when it comes to internals, with 4GB of RAM and expandable storage. However, in the camera department, the iPhone 7 Plus will clearly win with its dual lens camera. So which should you buy? Only you can decide that, but specs aside, the most likely one you will choose will be determined by if you prefer iOS or Android.
