Sensex closes lower for fourth day, Nifty below 8,150 level

The market ended at a two-week low in absence of positive global cues.

While the Sensex closed 114 points lower at 26374 levels, the Nifty ended at 8104 level, down 35 points.

For the fourth consecutive day, the Sensex closed in the red. The index is 0.82 percent up from the January 4 levels this year.

The Sensex traded in a range of 26, 340 and 26,505 on Monday.

Of leading 30 stocks, GAIL (2.23 percent), ICICI Bank (0.51 percent) were the top gainers.

Market heavyweights Reliance Industries and Infosys closed 0.43 percent higher and 0.42 percent lower, respectively.

Market breadth was negative with 1,552 stocks ending in the red against 1,077 stocks closing higher on the BSE.

Mannapuram Finance (5.88 percent) and Bharat Financial Inclusion (5.80 percent) fell the most on the BSE.

Asian markets

Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 index slipped 0.1 percent to end at 19,391.60 while South Korea's Kospi edged 0.2 percent lower to 2,038.39. Hong Kong's Hang Seng shed 0.9 percent to 21,832.68 and the Shanghai Composite index dipped 0.2 percent to 3,118.08. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 rose 0.5 percent to 5,562.10. Benchmarks in Taiwan, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines retreated.
