Sensex ends higher in volatile trade

Markets staged recovery, with benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty rising over 84 and 16 points, respectively following a fresh buying mainly in energy, FMCG, IT, oil&gas and power stocks.

Here are the updates:

3:30pm: BSE Sensex is trading higher by 84.72 points, or 0.31%, to 27,859.60.

2:20pm: BSE Sensex is trading lower by 35.60 points, or 0.13%, to 27,739.28, while the Nifty falls 30.55 points, or 0.36%, to 8,544.75.

2:00pm: Page Industries Ltd rises 5% to `14,650. The company posted a net profit of `67.95 crore in June quarter, up 8.5% from `62.63 crore a year ago. Total income rose 27.21% to `578.33 crore.

1:45pm: Hero MotoCorp Ltd rises 0.3% to `3,329.75. Around 4.88 million shares or 2.4% stake of the company changed hands in a single block deal. However, buyers and sellers were not immediately known, according to Bloomberg report.

1:30am: Edelweiss Financial Services Ltd falls 4% to `99.75. The stock fell 11% in last four trading sessions.

1:15pm: BSE Sensex rises 14.62 points, or 0.05%, to 27,789.50, while the Nifty falls 13.05 points, or 0.15%, to 8,562.25.

1:10pm: Jaypee group stocks are trading higher after Aditya Birla Group-controlled UltraTech Cement Ltd on Wednesday said India’s anti-trust regulator has approved its deal to buy Jaypee Group’s cement business. Jaiprakash Associates Ltd rises 5%, Jaypee Infratech Ltd 5%, Jaiprakash Power Ventures Ltd 1.7%.

12:55pm: Adani Enterprises Ltd falls 3.4% to `77.10. The company on Wednesday reported a flat consolidated net profit of `363.71 crore for the quarter ended 30 June. The company had posted a consolidated net profit after taxes, minority interest and share of profit of joint ventures and associates of `363.57 crore in the year-ago period.

12:40pm: Ipca Laboratories Ltd rises 5% to `525. The company reported 127.4% increase in its net profit to `47.57 crore in June quarter against `20.92 crore a year ago. Net sales rose 9.7% to `821.53 crore.

12:25pm: Gujarat Pipavav Port Ltd rises 2.6% to `172. The company reported 60.46% increase in its net profit to `59.75 crore in June quarter against `37.24 crore a year ago. Total income fell 8.85% to `173.88 crore.

12:10pm: Dilip Buildcon Ltd is trading at `246.60 on BSE, up 12.6% from its issue price after its `664 crore initial public offering (IPO) saw nearly 21 times subscription last week. The Bhopal-based roads and construction company had seen its IPO subscribed 20.95 times, when it closed for subscription on 3 August.

11:50am: BSE Sensex rises by 97.74 points, or 0.35%, to 27,872.62, while the Nifty gains 16.60 points, or 0.19%, to 8,591.90.

11:40am: Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd falls 1.6% to `804.10. Taro Pharmaceutical Industries’ (Taro Pharma) net profit rose 6.08% to $109.9 million on 8.6% increase in net sales to $233.8 million in Q1 June 2016 over Q1 June 2015. Net sales in Q1 June 2015 were negatively impacted by a $14 million provision for price protections.

11:30am: Shares of Dilip Buildcon Ltd, rises 9.6% at their debut on Thursday, after its `664-crore initial public offer had witnessed nearly 21 times subscription last week.

11:20am: Lincoln Pharmaceuticals Ltd rises 3.5% to `216. The company reported a net profit of `10.93 crore in June quarter, up 67.18% from `6.54 crore a year ago. Net sales rose 21.8% to `89.16 crore.

11:10am: Tata Communications Ltd rises 5.1% to `507.15. The Lok Sabha passed the Taxation Laws (Amendment) Bill. The Bill, when enacted, will put to rest the Tata Communications- Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL) surplus land issue and boost the government’s plans for non-core asset sales in large public sector undertakings (PSUs) that have land banks. The move would also enable Tata Communications to raise non-debt funds, which it was not able to because of the dispute, and improve its debt-equity ratio.

11:00am: Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd falls 1.5% to `1,425.75. Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd (M&M) on Wednesday said its net profit in the June quarter rose 12.37% from a year ago on higher sales, other income and lower finance cost. Net profit of India’s largest utility vehicle and tractor maker was `955.21 crore, against `850.09 crore last year. Net sales also increased 14% to `11,800.19 crore from `10,348.54 crore last year.

10:50am: Grasim Industries Ltd falls 5% to `4,639.40. The stock fell 13% in last three days. The company will announce its earnings due later today. According to 5 Bloomberg analyst, the company may post net profit of `725.90 crore and net sales will be at `9,366.50 crore.

10:40am: Aditya Birla Nuvo Ltd falls 0.2% to `1,509.85. The stock fell 6.5% in last three days. The company will announce its earnings due later today. According to Bloomberg analyst, the company may post net profit of `75.60 crore and net sales will be at `1,543.30 crore.

10:30am: Punj Lloyd Ltd rises 5% to `20.60 after the company said its net loss narrowed to `211.39 crore in June quarter from `581.84 crore a year ago. Total income rose 45.5% to `1,010.17 crore.

10:20am: VST Industries Ltd rises 5% to `2053.after the company reported 34.6% increased in its net profit in June quarter to `41.61 crore as against `30.92 crore a year ago. Net sales rose 33.3% to `253.41 crore.

10:10am: HSIL Ltd rises 3% to `345.95 after the company reported 36% increased in its net profit in June quarter to `26.48 crore as against `19.47 crore a year ago. Total income rose 15% to `498.65 crore.

10:00am: Banking stocks are trading lower. Jammu & Kashmir Bank falls 2.4%, Punjab National Bank 2.3%, Oriental Bank of Commerce 1.9%, Allahabad Bank 1.8%, Uco Bank 1.7%, Canara Bank 1.6%, Syndicate Bank 1.3%, IDBI Bank 1.1%, State Bank of India 1.1%, Corporation Bank 1.1%, Yes Bank 1.1%, Indusind Bank 1%.

9:50am: The 30-share S&P BSE Sensex is currently trading higher by 8.94 points, or 0.03%, to 27,783.82, while the Nifty 50 of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) falls 2.45 points, or 0.03%, to 8,572.85.

9:40am: Bank of Baroda falls 5.3% to `153. The bank said its net profit for the June quarter fell 59.74% from a year ago due to higher provisions and lower net interest income. Net profit for the quarter stood at `423.62 crore as compared to `1,052.15 crore a year ago. According to 26 Bloomberg poll, the bank was expected to post net profit of `398.40 crore.

9:35am: The Indian rupee on Thursday weakens against the US dollar at 66.87 a dollar, down 0.22% from its previous close of 66.72, from its previous close as traders were cautious ahead of macroeconomic data.

9:30am: The 10-year bond yield is trading at 7.084%, from its previous close of 7.101%. Since 1 July till date, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) bought $2.30 billion in equity and $1.17 billion in debt.

9:25am: In currency markets, the dollar weakens to ¥101.19 from ¥101.20 on Wednesday. The euro weakens to $1.1180 from $1.185.

9:15am: Benchmark US crude falls 26 cents to $41.45 after closing at $41.71 a barrel in New York Wednesday. Brent crude slides 25 cents to $43.80 in London from $44.05.

9:10am: Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index is nearly flat at 22,489 after shifting between gains and losses. Australia’s S&P ASX 200 falls nearly 1% at 5,490.60. China’s Shanghai Composite index is 0.1% down at 3,015.16. South Korea’s Kospi slides 0.3% to 2,038.73 following the South Korean central bank’s decision to maintain its monetary police rate. New Zealand’s NZE50 index is down less than 0.1% at 7,346.64. Southeast Asian markets are mixed.

9:00am: Asian stocks are mostly down on Thursday after a sell-off in energy companies due to lower oil prices pulled down US stocks overnight, and with regional volumes affected by the closure of Japan’s stock exchange for a holiday.

8:50am: The Dow Jones industrial average fell 37.39 points, or 0.2%, to 18,495.66. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index shed 6.25 points, or 0.3%, to 2,175.49. The Nasdaq composite index lost 20.90 points, or 0.4%, to 5,204.58.
