Sensex flat; Banking, healthcare stocks gain

In a volatile session, the benchmark BSE Sensex was trading higher in late morning deals after a brief negative spell amid good buying in auto, realty, industrials, healthcare, metal, power and capital goods sectors. Yesterday’s historic approval for the passage of GST in Rajya Sabha and higher Asian cues driving the sentiment. The 30-share index resumed higher at 27,899.88 and hovered between 27,921.91 and 27,633.11.

3:35pm: BSE Sensex rises 16.86 points or 0.06%, to 27,714.37.

2:35pm: BSE Sensex falls 33.85 or 0.12%, to 27,663.66, while the Nifty falls 13.45 points, or 0.16%, to 8,531.40.

2:20pm: Private banks are trading lower. Indusind Bank falls 1.3%, ICICI Bank 1.2%, Yes Bank 0.9%, HDFC Bank 0.3%, Kotak Mahindra Bank 0.2%.

2:10pm: Housing Development Finance Corp Ltd falls 0.7% to `1,316.15. The stock is down for the third consecutive sessions and fell over 4.4% in this period.

1:55pm: Banking stocks are trading higher. Union Bank of India up 4%, Oriental Bank of Commerce up 3.9%, Canara Bank 2.9%, Allahabad Bank 2.7%, Corporation Bank 2.3%, Jammu & Kashmir Bank 2%, Bank of Baroda 1.7%, Andhra Bank 1.7%, Federal Bank 1.6%, Punjab National Bank 1.5%, Uco Bank 1.5%, Dena Bank 1.5%,

1:35pm: Healthcare stocks are trading higher. Cadila Healthcare up 7.4%, Dishman Pharma 4.5%, Neuland Laboratories Ltd 4%, Natco Pharma 3.9%, Ipca Laboratories Ltd 3.1%, Sharon Bio-Medicine Ltd 3%, Opto Circuit 2.2%, Biocon Ltd 2.2%.

1:15pm: BSE Sensex falls 5.67 or 0.02%, to 27,691.67, while the Nifty falls 3.60 points, or 0.04%, to 8,541.25.

1:05pm: Metal stocks are trading higher. Jindal Steel & Power Ltd rises 2.4%, Tata Steel Ltd 2.1%, Hindalco Industries Ltd 1.4%, JSW Steel Ltd 1.4%, Vedanta Ltd 1.3%, SAIL up 1.1%, NALCO 1%, NMDC 0.8%.

12:55pm: Realty stocks are trading higher. Indiabulls Real Estate Ltd 2.5%, Unitch Ltd 2.3%, NBCC India 1.6%, DLF 1.5%, HDIL 1.4%, Sobha Ltd 1.1%, Prestige Estate Ltd 1.1%.

12:45pm: Dewan Housing Finance Corp Ltd rises 2.6% to `230. Dewan Housing Finance Corp. Ltd (DHFL) received a massive `19,000 crore worth of subscriptions for its public issue of bonds, reflecting easy liquidity conditions and a desire among investors to lock in high returns in a falling interest rate environment.

12:35pm: Arvind Ltd falls 0.1% to `290 ahead of its June quarter earnings. According to 10 Bloomberg analyst, the company may post net profit of `81.86 crore while net sales will be at `2,117.70 crore.

12:25pm: Cummins India Ltd rises 0.2% to `828 ahead of its June quarter earnings. According to 22 Bloomberg analyst, the company may post net profit of `198.80 crore while net sales will be at `1,256.60 crore.

12:15pm: Fortis Healthcare Ltd rises 0.4% to `190.55 ahead of its June quarter earnings. According to Bloomberg analyst, the company may post net loss of `30.70 crore while net sales will be at `1,146.50 crore.

12:05pm: Gati Ltd falls 0.2% to `176.90 ahead of its June quarter earnings. According to Bloomberg analyst, the company may post net profit of `11.90 crore while net sales will be at `431.40 crore.

11:55am: Siemens Ltd rises 0.2% to `1,520 ahead of its June quarter earnings. According to 12 Bloomberg analyst, the company may post net profit of `162.30 crore while net sales will be at `2,467.70 crore.

11:45am: BSE Sensex rises 68.34 or 0.25%, to 27,765.85, while the Nifty falls 17.85 points, or 0.21%, to 8,561.85.

11:35am: Auto companies are trading higher. Tata Motors Ltd rises 3.7%, Hero MotoCorp Ltd 1.7%, Bajaj Auto Ltd 1.5%, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd 1%, Ashok Leyland 1%, TVS Motors Ltd 0.8%.

11:25am: Cadila healthcare Ltd rises 4% to `361. The company reported a net profit of `356.20 crore in June quarter, down 22.6% from `46.02 crore a year ago.

11:15am: Natco Pharma Ltd rises 5% to `637 after the company said in a notice to BSE that it received final approval for Generic Tamiflu.

11:05am: Pricol Ltd rises 10% to `117.80 after the company said it reported a net profit of `22.18 crore in June quarter as compared to `1.64 crore a year ago.

10:55am: Logistic stocks are trading higher. Snowman Logistics, GATI Ltd rises 1%, Allcargo Logistics Ltd rises 4%, VRL Logistics Ltd 2%, Patel Integrated Logistics Ltd 1.6%, Transport Corporation of India Ltd 1.2%.

10:45am: Titan Co Ltd falls 2.2% to `405.10. Fewer wedding dates and high gold prices hurt Titan Company’s business in the April-June period. The watches and jewellery manufacturer’s profit fell 16.3% to `126.69 crore in Q1FY17 from `151.5 crore in the corresponding quarter last fiscal. The company had to bear an exceptional loss of `97 crore due to a voluntary retirement scheme announced during the period.

10:35am: Tribhovandas Bhimji Zaveri Ltd 3.5% to `68.45 after the company posted 8.8% decline in standalone net profit at `2.47 crore in June quarter as compared to `2.74 crore a year ago.

10:25am: TTK Prestige Ltd falls 4.1% to `4,949.20. Credit Suisse has downgraded the stock to “Underperform” from “Neutral” at Credit Suisse by equity analyst Arnab Mitra. The target price is `4,260 per share.

10:15am: Lupin Ltd falls 1.8% to `1,650.15. Credit Suisse has cut the rating of the stock to underperform from outperform.

10:05am: Motherson Sumi Systems Ltd rises 3% to `338.60. The company plans to raise over `3,500 crore with an objective to enhance long term resources.

9:55am: Bata India Ltd falls 5.1% to `524.90. The company reported a net profit of `50.49 crore in June quarter as compared to `50.18 crore a year ago. Net sales were down 1.46% during the quarter under review to `674.26 crore as against `684.29 crore of the corresponding quarter of the last financial

9:45am: The 30-share S&P BSE Sensex rises 18.73, or 0.07%, to 27,716.24, while the Nifty 50 of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) falls 3.65 points, or 0.04%, to 8,541.20.

9:35am: Punj Lloyd Ltd rises 6.1% to `20.90 after the company informed BSE that Pt Engineering Ltd, subsidiary of the Company has sold its entire shareholding in its wholly owned subsidiary registered in United Kingdom viz Simon Carves Engineering Limited to Engineers and Constructors International, Inc.

9:30am: The Indian rupee on Thursday strengthens against the US dollar at 66.88 a dollar, up 0.15% from its previous close of 66.99, tracking the gains in the local equity markets, after the Rajya Sabha passed the constitution amendment bill for the goods and services tax (GST).

9:25am: India’s 10-year bond yield is at 7.187%, as compared with its Wednesday’s close of 7.195%.

9:20am: The dollar weakens to ¥101.09 from ¥101.28 while the euro falls slightly to $1.1147 from $1.1148.

9:15am: Benchmark US crude climbs 27 cents to $41.10 per barrel in New York. The contract jumped $1.32, or 3.3%, to close at $40.83 on Wednesday after the US government said stockpiles of gasoline shrank by more than 3 million barrels last week. Brent crude rises 25 cents to $43.35 a barrel in London.

9:10am: Japan’s Nikkei 225 falls 0.4% to 16,020.15 and China’s Shanghai Composite Index drops 0.6% to 2,960.07. But South Korea’s Kospi adds 0.2% to 1,998.51 and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index adds 0.3% to 21,812.79. Stocks in Taiwan are lower but stock markets in Singapore and Indonesia are higher.

9:00am:Asian stock markets are mixed on Thursday as ahead of the Bank of England’s upcoming announcement of its monetary policy decision. Oil prices extended gains.

8:50am: US stocks edged higher on Wednesday as the big gains in the price of oil boosted energy companies. The Dow Jones industrial average broke a seven-day losing streak and added 0.2% to 18,355. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index gained 0.3% to 2,163.79. The Nasdaq composite rose 0.4% to 5,159.74.
