Sensex up over 100 points; Tata Motors rises 1%

Indian shares edged up on Friday, helped by gains in auto stocks such as Hero MotoCorp and Tata Motors on upbeat August sales data, while broader sentiment was subdued ahead of a key US jobs report later in the day.

Asian stock markets wobbled and the dollar was on the defensive as caution prevailed after downbeat US manufacturing data tempered recent optimism on the world’s largest economy that had revived expectations for a near-term rate hike by the Fed.

Here are the updates:

3:35pm: BSE Sensex ended higher by 108.63 points, or 0.38%, to 28,532.11.

2:30pm: BSE Sensex rises 114.10 points, or 0.40%, to 28,537.58, while the Nifty is up 31.25 points, or 0.36%, at 8,805.90.

2:25pm: Bhushan Steel Ltd rises 5% to `42.55 after the company said in a notice to BSE that Capacity at hot strip mill in Dhenkanal, Odisha increased to 5m tons/year from 4m tons.

2:15pm: Tata Motors Ltd rises 1.2% to `550.35. Fitch Ratings has upgraded Jaguar Land Rover Automotive plc’s (JLR) Long-Term Foreign-Currency Issuer Default Rating (IDR) and senior unsecured ratings to ‘BB+’ from ‘BB-’. The Outlook is Stable.

2:05pm: Mangalore Chemicals & Fertilizers Ltd rises 6% to `48 after the company said its net loss for the June quarter narrowed to `8.36 crore against `212.24 crore a year ago.Net sales fell 26.89% to `554.66 crore.

1:55pm: Transformers and Rectifiers India Ltd rises 3.4% to `322.90 after the company said in a notice to BSE that it got order worth `68 crore from Power Grid Corp Of India.

1:45pm: Jindal Steel & Power Ltd falls 2.8% to `81.90. The stock fell 7.3% in last three days.

1:35pm: BSE Sensex rises 25.01 points, or 0.09%, to 28,450.46, while the Nifty is up 1.75 points, or 0.02%, at 8,776.40.

1:25pm: Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd rises 3.4% to `267.70 after according to PTI report said that the national green tribunal refuses to quash environment clearance to Adani Group’s Vizhinjam International Seaport project in Kerala.

1:15pm: Maruti Suzuki India Ltd rises 2.2% to `5,184.75. The stock gaining from last five consecutive sessions and gained 6% in this period.

1:00pm: Coal India Ltd falls 1.7% to `332.25. The company reported the lowest production and shipments in three years after heavy rains flooded its mines. Coal production in August dropped 10.4 percent from a year ago to 32.4 million metric tons and shipments declined 9.6 percent to 36.72 million tons, both plunging to the lowest since the same month in 2013

12:50pm: Reliance Industries Ltd falls 1.4% to `1,014.75. The stock fell 5% in last three days.

12:40pm: Tata Motors Ltd rises 2% to `555.50. The stock is trading higher from six consecutive sessions and gained 12.5% in this period.

12:25pm: Housing Development Finance Corp Ltd rises 1.2% to `1,439. The stock is gaining from last six trading sessions and rose 6% in this period.

12:15pm: Bajaj Auto Ltd falls 2.2% to `2,932.10 after the company reported 5% decline in its August sales to 325,347 units from a year ago while motorcycle sales fell 4% and commercial vehicle sales fell 12% on year on year basis.

12:00pm: Cadila Healthcare Ltd rises 3.5% to `388.50 after the company said in a notice to BSE that its Oral Solid Dosage drug manufacturing plant located at SEZ, Ahmedabad has received an Establishment Inspection Report (EIR) from the USFDA following the inspection carried out in January 2016. The receipt of EIR indicates the successful closure of the inspection points (483s) raised. It may be mentioned that this plant is a separate manufacturing unit and does not form a part of the Moraiya formulations manufacturing facility.

11:50am: Shipping Corp Of India rises 5.5% to `69.50. State-run Shipping Corp. of India Ltd, struggling for respite from an industry downturn, plans to revive a 40-year-old joint venture with an Iranian company. The recent easing of sanctions on Iran opened the way to resuscitating Irano Hind Shipping Co., which potentially offers access to Central Asian markets such as Kazakhstan, according to the Indian company’s chairman B.B. Sinha.

11:40am: Alstom India Ltd rises 0.7% to `601.60 ahead of its June quarter earnings. According to Bloomberg analyst estimates, the company may post net profit of `65.40 crore while net sales will be at `425 crore.

11:30am: GOL Offshore Ltd falls 0.7% to `40.50 while Noida Toll Bridge Co Ltd rises 0.9% to `23.35 ahead of there June quarter earnings.

11:20am: Brooks Laboratories Ltd rises 14% to `114.60 after the company said its new manufacturing facility at Vadodra, Gujarat has been granted with Manufacturing Licence from Commissioner of Food & Drugs Control Administration, Gandhinagar,

11:10am: BSE Sensex rises 50.69 points, or 0.18%, to 28,474.17, while the Nifty is up 5.55 points, or 0.06%, at 8,780.20.

10:55am: Essel Propack Ltd falls 4.6% to `213.85. The company said its net profit rose 6.63% to `37.62 crore in June quarter against `35.28 crore a year ago.

10:45am: TVS Motors Ltd rises 3.2% to `338 after the company company posted a growth of 20.5% in sales during August 2016, with total sales increasing to 274,303 units from 227,653 units recorded in the same month of last year.

10:35am: Patel Engineering Ltd hit 20% upper circuit for the second secession. The stock was trading at `64.50. The stock is gaining after it expects that its debt to reduce by 50% on cabinet decision on arbitration awards.

10:25am: Hindustan Construction Co Ltd rises 13% to `36.90. The stock gained 61.2% in last three days.

10:15am: C&C Constructions Ltd rises 17% to `22.60. The stock gained 52% in last three days.

10:05am: Telecom stocks are trading lower. Idea Cellular Ltd falls 3%, Reliance Communications Ltd falls 2.1%, Bharti Airtel Ltd 1.1%.

9:55am: The 30-share S&P BSE Sensex is currently trading higher by 23.90 points, or 0.08%, to 28,447.38, while the Nifty 50 of the National Stock Exchange is trading flat at 8,774.95.

9:45am: PVR Ltd rises 4% to `1,230.05. Asia’s largest film group and theatre operator Wanda Cinema, owned by China’s richest man, Wang Jianlin has revived talks with Ajay Bijli, the promoter of PVR Ltd, to buy a controlling stake in India’s largest multiplex operator, ET reported.

9:35am: The Indian rupee on Friday strengthens to a two-week high against the US dollar at 66.83 per dollar, up 0.21% from its previous close of 66.96, after foreign institutional investors continued to buy in local equity markets. Traders are cautious ahead of the US payroll data due later on Friday.

9:25am: The 10-year bond yield is trading at 7.113%, compared with its Thursday’s close of 7.121%.

9:20am: The dollar is nearly flat at ¥103.36 after coming down from a one-month high of ¥104 overnight. The euro is trading little changed at $1.119 after bouncing about 0.3% on Thursday.

9:15am: US crude is up 1% at $43.59 a barrel after sliding 3.4% overnight to a three-week low as a growing glut from US crude stockpiles soured market sentiment. Brent rises 1% to $45.88 a barrel after shedding more than 3% on Thursday.

9:10am: The MSCI Asia Pacific Index rises less than 0.1% to 138.39, after dropping less than 0.1%. South Korea’s Kospi index gains 0.1% after the nation’s economy grew 0.8% in the second quarter, stronger than previously estimated. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 Index drops 0.4%. New Zealand’s S&P/NZX 50 Index falls 0.3%. Markets in China and Hong Kong have yet to start trading.

9:00am: Asian stocks fluctuated in a narrow range as investors avoided taking on risk before key US payrolls data that may provide hints on the path of interest rates in the world’s largest economy.

8:50am: The Dow Jones industrial average rose 18.42 points, or 0.1%, to 18,419.30. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index lost 0.09 points to 2,170.86. The Nasdaq composite gained 13.99 points, or 0.3%, to 5,227.21.
