Mumbai: Union agriculture minister and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Sharad Pawar on Friday rejected a demand by the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Maharashtra unit for the resignation of chief minister Prithviraj Chavan and deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar.

“The elections to Lok Sabha had national references, so BJP’s demand that the state government should take responsibility for the defeat (in Lok Sabha elections) and resign is devoid any merit,” Pawar said.

An NCP statement cited Pawar as saying, “The people of the state voted in favour of Narendra Modi and Shiv Sena has also benefited from this pro-Modi vote.”

“Considering overall performance of all the political parties in the state damage to NCP is not much, I continue to believe in the fact that NCP and Congress need to put up a united front in the state.”

NCP’s strength in Lok Sabha has reduced from eight to three.
