New Delhi: In 1984, the Bharatiya Janata Party had just two seats in the Lok Sabha. Thirty years later, it has 282.

This year is seminal for the party because it has extended its footprint beyond northern and western India.

The party’s influence now stretches from Arunachal Pradesh in the north east to Karnataka in the south, even as the Congress, which defined Indian politics for six decades, has imploded.

Is this the beginning of structural transformation of Indian politics?
