1952 – Inheriting interests

In 1952 the iconic Australian newspaperman Sir Keith Murdoch (pictured left) dies and his only son Keith Rupert Murdoch inherits his father’s interests in Adelaide newspaper The News. Over the next few years, Rupert Murdoch expands his empire, acquiring a string of newspapers across Australia. His acquisition of Sydney’s The Daily Mirror (a copy of which Murdoch is pictured holding [R], shortly after the May 1960 takeover) allows him to challenge the dominance of his two main rivals in the Sydney market.
