New Delhi: Delhi Metro on Wednesday unveiled its fully automated train, saying these faster and driverless trains will run on the upcoming two lines.But these trains too will be operated by drivers for a year before the Delhi Metro Rail Corp (DMRC) declares the driverless trains safe, DMRC Managing Director Mangu Singh said."Initially, the train will be run by a driver for one year on trial basis. Only after successfully conducting the trial, it will be fully automated. Unless we are 100 percent sure, we won't start with driverless trains," he told the media.The upcoming lines connect Majlis Park and Shiv Vihar in north Delhi (58.5 km) as well as Botanical Garden in Noida and Janakpuri West in west Delhi (38 km).The Majlis Park-Shiv Vihar line would be the longest on the Delhi Metro network.Mangu Singh said the trial run for the Pink Line (Majlis Park-Shiv Vihar) and the Magenta Line (Botanical Garden-Janakpuri West) would be completed by the end of this year. "Most of the work on both lines is complete. I'm hopeful that some of the stretches would be operational for public this year itself."The new trains would have six fixed coaches and can carry more passengers.A senior DMRC official, H.S. Anand, said the new trains would be 10 percent faster and 20 percent more energy efficient than the present ones."In the existing trains, only 50 percent of the coaches are motorised. In the new trains, four of the six coaches are powered. So acceleration would be fast and less power would be consumed."The average speed of the new train would be 37-38 km per hour, compared to 30-32 km per hour now. Anand said the trains would generate electricity even when brakes are applied, enabling the air-conditioning system to keep working.To increase passenger capacity, the new coaches' bodies have been widened to 3.2 metres against the 2.9 metres in existing trains, Anand said."Also, the space will increase as the driver's cabin will be removed and 40 more people can be accommodated. Overall, the new trains will be able to carry 1,866 passengers," Anand said.The new trains also have passenger-friendly features such as WiFi, USB charging ports, redesigned grab handles, digital route map and backrest near the wheelchair area. Each train will have six LED screens with videos, graphics, animation and real time video streaming capacity.DMRC has ordered 81 new trains and received 14 so far.Delhi Metro, which began operations in 2002, today transports 25-26 lakh people every day.

Three persons allegedly cheated a 58-year-old woman of her expensive jewellery by fraudulently using a Delhi police identity card in South Delhi’s Vasant Kunj area on Sunday. The victim, identified as Jan Vati, a resident of Sector D in Vasant Kunj, runs a business. At around 5 pm while she was walking from Nelson Mandela Marg towards DLF Ambience Mall in Vasant Kunj, she was stopped by three persons who had their motorcycles parked nearby. One of them allegedly took out an identity card from his wallet that looked like a Delhi police ID and immediately put it back. The men said they were from the Vasant Kunj police station. “The accused asked the woman to take off her gold jewellery that she was wearing as on Saturday night at the same place a woman was stabbed by someone and robbed of her jewellery,” said the police. “When the woman took off her gold bangles, ring and chain and was about to put it in her bag, one of the accused asked her to put them on a piece of paper he had produced in front of her.” The minute the woman put her gold jewellery on the paper, the trio got on their motorcycles and fled from the spot with the jewellery. The woman got shocked and it took her sometime to realise that she had been cheated. “She started panicking and quickly ran to the Vasant Kunj police station and complained about the incident,” said the police. “The jewellery she lost is worth over Rs 2 lakh. While one of the accused seemed to be in his mid-twenties the other two looked close to 40 years old.”

Twenty-two counsellors will be placed in the 11 police districts of the capital by April 15, to deal with the rise in marital disputes and cases of domestic violence against women.The counsellors, being trained by Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), will be deployed across by April 15. They will try to resolve marital problems by first talking to the couples.They have been hired under the project "Violence Free Home — a women's Right" jointly started by TISS, National Commission for Women (NSW), and Delhi Police.The counsellors have been getting training from TISS experts at the office of Delhi Police's Women and Child cell at Nanakpura in south Delhi since March 14.The cell already has six counsellors based there since 2009. The 22 others will be deployed across the districts."It is a project funded by NSW, while TISS provides technical help in the form of training to the counsellors and police officials, and we use the infrastructure and the personnel of Delhi Police to run the counselling sessions," said Renu Kalra, coordinator of the Violence Free Home project.Before the start of their training in Delhi the counsellors were taken to seven districts in Maharashtra for a field visit. "Several such cells have already been running in a few districts of Maharashtra by TISS. The counsellors got hands-on experience about how such cells have been operating in other parts of the country," Kalra said.According to counsellors currently helping couples and women at the Nanakpura-based Women and Child cell, there is an increased need for counselling also because of a spurt in cyber crime against women in the country."With an increased use of internet, crimes such as stalking of women through social media sites have increased. A lot of women come to us complaining of being trolled and abused on social media sites. We counsel them and refer them to the relevant officials," said Yashodha Pradhan, another coordinator of the project said.The counsellors, all postgraduates in Psychology or social work, said that they first try to resolve the issues faced by women and couples through talk, and when the victims require further help, legal and other channels are explored.The counsellors said violence against women fell under several categories, including "financial violence" where the woman is not provided money by her husband for her upkeep, or her salary is taken away by him. "The second type of crime is physical violence by her husband or in-laws," Pradhan said."The third type of violence against women that we come across is mental or emotional violence, where the husband, knowing fully that physical harm would backfire against him, tortures the women through silent treatment, like by not speaking to her for days," she added.Sexual and religious violence are the other two types of violence which women face these days, said counsellors."A woman came to us who wanted to convert to Christianity but was not allowed to do so by her parents," Pradhan said.
