The Delhi Police lodged a case under the Arms Act against a man for allegedly brandishing a pistol and abusing a couple at the entrance of a five-star hotel in southwest Delhi’s RK Puram area. Police said they were trying to identify the accused. Sources told The Indian Express that he is the son of a Uttar Pradesh-based politician.

The matter came to light after a one minute video surfaced on social media in which the man is seen carrying a pistol in his hand and threatening a couple outside Hyatt Regency Hotel. At least one of the friends is seen arguing with the couple before hotel staff intervened.

DCP (southwest) Devender Arya said a case under Arms Act has been filed on October 15 after a complaint was lodged by the hotel’s assistant security manager.

According to the complaint, the incident happened on the intervening night of October 13 and 14. “A male is seen brandishing a weapon in the footage. Accordingly, a case under section 25/27 (Arms Act) of the IPC has been registered. Efforts are on to identify the person. Legal action is being taken as per law,” said the DCP.

Police sources said the accused is the son of a UP-based former Member of Parliament. A Delhi Police team was sent to his residence in UP to verify the incident. Police said they have not yet received any complaint from the couple. However, they were also trying to establish the exact cause of the argument.

Meanwhile, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju today said that Delhi Police will take “strong and appropriate action” against the man. “The Delhi Police has initiated action on this incident, which is also being shown in the media. An FIR has been registered under the Arms Act and the Indian Penal Code. Strong and appropriate action will be taken. Also verifying the identity of others,” Rijiju tweeted while posting the video on his Twitter handle.

The hotel authorities have also issued a statement, expressing concern over the safety of guests.

Reacting over the incident, Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi Manish Sisodia said law and order is no one’s priority. The priority is to frame AAP MLAs in fake cases, he told ANI. “Law&order is no one’s priority. Priority is to frame AAP MLAs in fake cases. The day law & order is made priority, it’ll be on right track. It’s a 5-star hotel in VIP area, how did this happen?” he was quoted as saying by the news agency.

Congress leader and Sonia Gandhi’s son-in-law Robert Vadra also expressed serious concern over the law and order situation in the city and posted a few pictures of the incident on Facebook.
