A woman committed suicide by throwing herself in front of a train at Ghitorni Metro station in south Delhi on Friday morning. Sources said the incident took place around 10:40am when the woman jumped in front of a Shyapur Badli-bound train on platform 2. She was killed on the spot.

Police are yet to ascertain her identity. No suicide note was found on her. Cops are now scanning the footages of the CCTV installed at the platforms for leads. “The victim didn’t leave behind any suicide note. We are trying to identify the woman,” a senior police officer said.

“The lady jumped from platform number 2 towards Samaypur Badli at Ghitorni metro station around 10.40 am today (Friday) and died on the spot,” Delhi Metro DCP Jitendra Mani told IANS.

“Her body is still unidentified. No suicide note was discovered from her possession,” Mani said.

The police are trying to identify her and are examining the CCTV footage.

Metro services were disrupted on the Yellow line for nearly 20 minutes during peak morning hours and passengers faced problems as trains got delayed.

Delhi Metro has been facing increasing incidents of suicides at platforms. Earlier on March 24, a woman had allegedly committed suicide at Kashmere Gate metro station. She was found hanging inside a store room on platform number 2.

Last year, 12 people had committed suicide at one of Delhi’s 156 metro stations, CISF data showed. While 21 people were saved by security personnel and other passengers, more than 20 had to be hospitalised after suffering varying degrees of injuries in their suicide attempts.

To prevent suicides and increase safety at the Metro station, the DMRC had introduced screen doors at platforms in 2015. However, only some of the key stations that see heavy footfall have been provided with these so far. Last year, the CISF too planned to introduce a special drill to train its personnel in identifying people who betray signs of suicidal tendencies and stop them from taking the fatal jump in front of an oncoming train.
