
Explained: Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Act 2019 | Nitin Gadkari
On July 15, 2019, the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act 2019 was introduced in the Lok Sabha by Nitin Gadkari, the Minister for Road Transport and Highways. The bill, which sought to amend the existing Motor Vehicles Act 1988, was passed by both houses and approved by the President, coming into effect on September 1.As per a report by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, 3 people die every 10 minutes in India due to road accidents. In 2017 alone, 4.64 lakh accidents occurred in India, leading to the death of 1.47 lakh people.
In an attempt to curb traffic rules violation, the Act imposes heavy fines, which will go up annually every April by 10%.
