Kolkata: Chinese tourist arrested for flying drone near army base in Fort William

© Reuters A Chinese tourist was arrested after he was found to be flying a drone at Victoria Memorial in Kolkata. India Army base at Fort William is close to Victoria Memorial and flying a drone within 3 km radius outside and army base is strictly prohibited as there is danger of it getting used to spy on important army installations. The Chinese tourist will spend eight days in lockup.

Li Zeiwei, the Chinese tourist, was found to be operating the drone from his iPhone. He was in South zone of the Victoria Memorial Complex. The Chinese tourist has been booked under sections of Aircraft Act along with other applicable sections.

Li Zeiwei claims that he did not know that there are "no-drone zones" where flying drones is prohibitted. He said that he was not aware of the strict restrictions and was using the drone just to click pictures as a tourist. He was produced in court.

Prosecution argued that Li Zeiwei's case cannot be treated lightly. Prosecution said that since the drone was being flown very near to a military base. A due investigation is required. The Magistrate gave the tourist an opportunity to state what he had to say.

After hearing both the sides, the magistrate sent Li Zeiwei to police custody till March 25.
