Four Army soldiers lost their lives in a suicide attack bid by terrorists at an Army base camp in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district on Thursday. Soon after the attack, an encounter broke out in which security forces gunned down two terrorists, who are believed to be from the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), and were heavily armed with deadly ‘steel core’ bullets.

According to police, two terrorists who carried out a ‘fidayeen’ attack were shot down after an over four-hour gun battle which started at 2 am and ended just before 6.30 am.

The attack came four days ahead of India’s 75th Independence Day next Monday.

The encounter broke out after the terrorists tried to sneak into the post at Pargal near Rajouri in the dark to carry out a ‘fidayeen’ (suicide) attack, officials said.

DGP Dilbag Singh told news agency PTI that the two ‘fidayeens’ (suicide attackers), believed to be from the banned JeM, attempted to sneak into the camp but were neutralised.

Meanwhile, Defence spokesman at Jammu Lt Col Devender Anand said alert sentries of the Army post at Parghal in Rajouri district in the Jammu region, about 185 km from Jammu city, detected suspicious persons approaching their post taking advantage of the inclement weather and dense foliage.

He said the sentries challenged the two terrorists who lobbed grenades while attempting to gain entry inside the post. However, alert troops cordoned the area and engaged them in a firefight, he added.

The attack marks the return of ‘fidayeen’ to the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir after more than three years. The last such strike took place on February 14, 2019 at Lethpora in Pulwama district of south Kashmir, in which 40 CRPF personnel were killed.

There was an intelligence input about the presence of terrorists from the JeM in the region and police and other security agencies were carrying out operations in various parts of the district, police said.

JeM terrorists had earlier unsuccessfully attempted to carry out a ‘fidayeen’ attack on April 22 in Jammu when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to be in town. However, the two terrorists were killed in a chance encounter with the CISF near the Sunjawan Army camp. An officer of the paramilitary force was also killed.

An Army spokesperson tweeted that Army chief General Manoj Pande and all ranks “salute the supreme sacrifice” of four soldiers who laid down their lives in the line of duty in Rajouri and offer deepest condolences to the bereaved families.

Omar Condoles Deaths of Jawans

J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha condemned the attack and vowed to deal with terrorists and their supporters in a befitting manner. He tweeted, “We shall deal with evil designs of terrorists and their backers in a befitting manner.”

National Conference leader and former chief minister of J&K Omar Abdullah also condoled the death of the soldiers in the attack and said, “Very sorry to hear about the death in the line of duty of three soldiers following a militant attack in Rajouri. While condemning the attack I send my condolences to the families & my prayers for the swift recovery of those officers & jawans injured in the attack #Rajouri.”

BJP’s Jammu and Kashmir unit has also condoled the deaths, saying elements in Pakistan were getting riled up now that all citizens in J&K were celebrating ‘Azaadi ka Amrit Mohatsav’ with the tricolour.

Valley Sees Terror Bids

On Wednesday, three Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists were killed in an encounter with security forces in Budgam district. The security forces had launched a cordon-and-search operation at Waterhail in the Khansahib area of the district following inputs about the presence of terrorists there. The search turned into an encounter after the ultras opened fire, they had said.

“All the three hiding LeT #terrorists #neutralised. Bodies being retrieved from the site, identification yet to be ascertained. #Incriminating materials, arms & ammunition recovered. A big success for us,” ADGP, Kashmir, Vijay Kumar had tweeted. Earlier, Kumar had said three Lashkar men, including most wanted Lateef Rather, had been trapped at the encounter site.

“03 #terrorists of #terror outfit LeT(TRF) including terrorist Lateef Rather trapped in ongoing #encounter. Terrorist Lateef is involved in several #civilian #killings including Rahul Bhat & Amreen Bhat,” he had tweeted.

And security forces had averted a major tragedy Wednesday by recovering an about 30-kg improvised explosive device (IED) in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir just days before the 75th Independence Day, police had said. The IED was recovered after a specific input generated by police, Additional Director General of Police, Kashmir, Vijay Kumar had said.

“An IED weighing approx. 25 to 30 Kgs recovered near Tahab Crossing on Circular road in #Pulwama by Police and Security Forces. A major #tragedy has been #averted by specific input generated by Pulwama Police,” the ADGP Kashmir wrote on Twitter.
