NEW DELHI: The home ministry on Wednesday claimed that immigration function at airports takes the least time among the passenger clearance processes at airports, requiring 5-10 minutes in the queue at immigration counters and 1-2 minutes for passenger clearance.

Stating in a reply to a Rajya Sabha question that immigration clearance is a national security function and carried out as per norms and procedures, MoS (home) Nityanand Rai underlined that “Bureau of Immigration takes minimum possible time for immigration clearance of outgoing and incoming passengers without compromising national security with the help of technical solutions”.

He shared that the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) norms prescribe 60 minutes for the entire process for outgoing passengers and 45 minutes for the entire process for incoming passengers in normal times.

“Due to observance of Covid-19 protocols, the time taken in the entire process has increased to some extent at various airports. However, immigration function out of the three processes takes the least time with about 5-10 minutes in queue and about 1-2 minutes in passenger clearance,” he stated.

Rai said that check-in with the airlines takes time for outgoing passengers due to RT-PCR requirements by other countries. Similarly the process for incoming passengers includes mandatory health check as per the Covid-19 guidelines of ministry of health and family welfare, immigration clearance and then baggage collection.
