© Arvind Yadav/Hindustan Times/Getty Congress has come out heavily against Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for her handling of the Indian economy and her statement that despite global slowdown, India's growth is higher than China and the US. The Congress said the country needs a new finance minister.

Senior Congress leader Sanjay Jha in a tweet said, "India needs a new finance minister desperately. The distinguished lady [Nirmala Sitharaman] says India's GDP growth rate is higher than that of the US and China. But Madam, the US is a $21 trillion and China $ 14.8 trillion economy. Do you even know what 'base levels' mean? We are at $2.8 trillion."

Sanjay Jha was reacting to Nirmala Sitharaman's press conference this evening in New Delhi. In the press conference, Nirmala Sitharaman said India's GDP continues to grow at a faster pace than the global economy and any other major economy.

Addressing the press conference, Sitharaman said reform is a continuous process for her government and it tops the agenda.

She also said that the result of US-China trade war and currency devaluation, a very volatile situation has developed in the global trade.

In a tweet Congress said the Indian economy is currently going through its "worst phase" in 70 years.
