Imran Tahir picked up a record five-wicket haul as South Africa cricket team got their tour to New Zealand off to a sensational start with a 78-run win in the one-off Twenty20 International at Eden Park in Auckland.

Imran Tahir’s 5/24 made the difference for South Africa cricket team after they had earlier posted 185/6 thanks to a splendid 62 off 43 balls from Hashim Amla. Faf du Plessis (36), AB de Villiers (26) and JP Duminy (29) chipped in with some important knocks as the Proteas notched up an impressive score.

In response, New Zealand cricket team were put under immense pressure as early strikes from Chris Morris and Andile Phehlukwayo dented their chase. Tahir came on and cleaned up the lower-middle order as he picked up his maiden five-wicket haul.

In the process, Tahir became the second-fastest bowler to take 50 wickets in Twenty20 Internationals. He achieved the feat in just 31 games. Sri Lanka’s Ajantha Mendis leads the list, having reached the milestone in just 26 games. Tahir, however, is the quickest South African to pick up 50 wickets in the format, bettering Dale Steyn’s mark, who achieved it in 35 games.

Tahir also became the third South African bowler to take a five-wicket haul in Twenty20 Internationals. Ryan McLaren became the first South African bowler to take a five-wicket haul during South Africa’s T20I against the West Indies in North Sound, Antigua in 2010.

Five years later in 2015, David Wiese became the second bowler to take a five-wicket haul and it came against the West Indies in Durban.

South Africa will now play five ODIs and three Tests against New Zealand cricket team. The first ODI will be played in Hamilton on February 19.
