Manish Pandey, 27, the Karnataka batsman who plays for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), suffered a left side strain during a practice session. KKR face Mumbai Indians in Qualifier 2 at Bangalore’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Friday.

Karthik was one of the five standbys named by the Indian selectors while announcing the 15-member squad for the tournament, to be played in England and Wales from June 1 to 18.

Suresh Raina, Rishabh Pant, Kuldeep Yadav and Shardul Thakur were the others the reserves list, just in case those in the squad broke down at the end of a busy season. The 31-year-old Karthik, who played for the eliminated Gujarat Lions in IPL, last played an ODI in the 2014 Asia Cup in Dhaka, against Afghanistan.

Defending champions India will open their campaign against Pakistan at Edgbaston on June 4. They are in Group B with South Africa and Sri Lanka in the eight-team tournament. Australia, hosts England, New Zealand and Bangladesh are in Group A.

The BCCI did not announce the squad by the deadline of April 25 to raise doubts of the team’s participation following a stand-off with the International Cricket Council (ICC) over its revision of revenue and administration norms. The issue was sorted and the team was named on May 9.
